Surgeon, Author, Educator and Inventor Dr. Robert Weinstein discusses all things foot and ankle health related. From common conditions and their conservative treatments to complex reconstructive surgical challenges, every topic will be explained in plain language for all audiences.
In this episode we explore the biology of human papillomavirus (HPV), how plantar warts develop, why certain patients are more susceptible, how to distinguish verrucae from other plantar lesions, and the evolution of treatment from historical remedies to modern immunotherapy and surgical excision. The most important take home message is that removing the visible wart is not necessarily the same as eliminating the viral infection. That distinction explains much of the difficulty surrounding recurrence and treatment-resistant lesions.

The Lapidus Procedure
In this episode, I discuss the historical development of the Lapidus procedure, patient selection, surgical technique, contemporary fixation strategies, union rates, complications, hardware-related problems, recovery, and realistic patient expectations. Because reported outcomes vary with patient selection, operative technique, fixation construct, and definitions of union, we must distinguish general evidence-based ranges from outcomes that should not be interpreted as universal guarantees.

Bone Grafting
In this episode, we explore the science and clinical applications of bone grafting in foot and ankle surgery. We discuss the history of bone transplantation, the biological principles of osteoconduction, osteoinduction, and osteogenesis, and the differences between autografts, allografts, synthetic bone substitutes, and orthobiologics. We examine common graft harvest sites, including the iliac crest, proximal tibia, distal tibia, and calcaneus, and explain how grafts are used in hindfoot fusions, flatfoot reconstruction, revision surgery, and the treatment of bone loss. We also discuss graft selection, complications, evidence-based decision-making, and patient expectations during recovery.
