About BirDie Golf Club Podcast

Welcome to the Birdie Golf Club Podcast, where your host Dave weekly finds golf personalities from around the world and shares a conversation with them to learn more about their journey and why golf is important to them. From current Tour Pro's to Content Creators and Industry Experts, I look to get deeper than just an interview and instead find value in each individual. I hope the podcast above anything becomes a companion to your weekly routine and if along the way we can all find tips to help our game both off and on the course, then wouldn't that be lovely.

Project Bandit: Can You Game the Golf Handicap System? | Coops

Can you become a golf handicap bandit while playing every round honestly? Has the World Handicap System made it too easy to manipulate your handicap, or is the problem with the way golfers approach the game? Welcome to Project Bandit. I'm setting out to record my golf honestly, let my handicap reflect my current form, and discover what happens under the current World Handicap System. No cheating. No manipulating scores. Just golf. But not everyone thinks it's a good idea. Joining me is Coach Cooper (@CooperGolf27), a low-handicap golfer who believes the old handicap system did a better job of keeping golfers honest. We debate whether today's system rewards genuine improvement, whether handicap manipulation has become too easy, and whether it's time to rethink how amateur golf competitions work. In this episode of the Birdie Golf Club Podcast, we discuss: 🏌️ The World Handicap System: Is it fair, or does it make it too easy for golfers to gain an advantage? ⛳ Golf bandits: What's the difference between a genuine high-handicap golfer and someone who takes advantage of the system? 🏆 Competition golf: Should only competition rounds count towards your handicap? Has Stableford scoring had its day? 🇩🇪 Golf in Germany: How does the German golf licence system work, and what can we learn from it? 📉 Project Bandit's future: Coops challenges me to go from a 7 handicap to a 4 the proper way once the experiment ends. Can I do it? 🧠 The mental game: Why thinking less about your score, handling pressure and committing to your shots can transform your golf. We also discuss outrageous Stableford scores, society golf, handicap allowances, course difficulty and my first iGolf round in 45mph winds. And Coops has a bold prediction: Project Bandit will fail. Will he be proved right? Follow Coops on Instagram: @CooperGolf27 The Birdie Golf Club Podcast brings you honest conversations with golfers, coaches, industry experts and personalities from across the game. From professional golf and equipment reviews to the stories, challenges and debates that make golf what it is, we explore the game from every angle. If you enjoy golf conversations, expert insights and opinions that challenge conventional thinking, follow the Birdie Golf Club Podcast on Apple Podcasts. Join the debate: Is the World Handicap System helping golfers or creating more bandits? Should amateur competitions move away from Stableford and focus more on medal play? Scottie Pearman on Becoming World No. 1 and Chasing the World Championship

What does it take to become world number one in World Long Drive — and why is winning the world championship still the ultimate goal? On this episode of Birdie Golf Club, I sit down with Scottie Pearman, the World Long Drive star who reached the top of the rankings and is still hungry for the biggest prize in the sport. Scottie explains what being world number one really means, how the two-year ranking system rewards consistency, and why becoming the hunted rather than the hunter changes the pressure. We also look ahead to the World Long Drive Championship in Reno, where altitude, weather and temperature can make a huge difference to driving distance. With morning drives potentially reaching 370–390 yards and warmer conditions pushing the numbers towards 420 yards or more, the conditions could play a huge role. Scottie opens up about the mental side of competition, balancing family life and charity work with his preparation, and why the first day is all about staying disciplined rather than trying to win the tournament too early. Away from the grid, we discuss his daughter Caitlin's college golf commitment, dream golf trips to Scotland, special golf experiences, Southern food and what he might eat if he finally gets his hands on that world championship. ⛳ IN THIS EPISODE: • Becoming world number one in World Long Drive • Why the rankings reward consistency over two years • The pressure of being the hunted instead of the hunter • Why complacency is dangerous at the top • Chasing the World Long Drive Championship • Preparing for Reno and its unique conditions • Altitude, temperature and the pursuit of 400+ yard drives • How the World Long Drive competition format works • The mental approach needed to survive the early rounds • Being the oldest player ever ranked world number one • Family life, charity work and Caitlin's college golf future • Why Scottie wants to experience Scotland's best golf courses ⏱️ CHAPTERS 00:00 – World Long Drive recap and Scottie's finish in Reno 00:59 – Why Scottie comes across as competitive but gracious 02:06 – How it feels to be world number one 03:27 – The pressure of being the hunted instead of the hunter 04:18 – Why complacency is the biggest danger at the top 05:18 – Oldest player ever ranked number one 06:54 – Balancing charity work, family and competition prep 09:14 – Why the Reno partnership matters for the sport 10:14 – What makes Reno a strong host city 11:51 – Weather, elevation and how conditions may play 13:30 – Expected long-drive numbers in morning and warmer conditions 14:59 – Competition format and why the first day is tricky 15:58 – “It's business” once the grid starts 16:49 – Scouting the venue and managing pre-event nerves 17:41 – Bojangles, bowberry biscuits and Southern food 20:30 – The ideal post-win meal and a possible beef Wellington 23:49 – Why Scottie would love a golf trip to Scotland 26:42 – The St Andrews lottery and his love of special courses 28:23 – Why experiences matter more than casual rounds 31:18 – Final thoughts before the championship 32:13 – Caitlin's college golf commitment and strong tournament round 💬 JOIN THE CONVERSATION What do you think matters most in long drive: raw ball speed, technique, the conditions or the mental game?
