Bishop Williamson opens the session by focusing on the spiritual hunger and thirst mentioned in the Gospel of St. John, specifically connecting these desires to the invitation of Christ. He begins by referencing John 7:37-38, where our Lord promises that those who believe in Him will have rivers of living water flowing from within them. He frames this discussion within the broader context of the spiritual life, emphasizing the necessity of coming to Christ with a sincere desire for grace, as the initial step in the journey of faith.
Throughout the lecture, the Bishop addresses several key theological points, starting with the nature of spiritual grace and the indwelling of the Holy Trinity within the soul. He discusses the concept of appropriation, explaining how the actions of one Person of the Trinity are attributed to the others, while maintaining the distinct roles of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He cites various scriptural references, including Isaiah 41:18, Ezekiel 36:25, and Joel 2:28, to illustrate the fulfillment of prophecy in the New Testament. He also digresses into a discussion regarding the discernment of truth, using the example of the crowd's reaction to Christ, and warns against the deceptive nature of false dichotomies between the prophetic and messianic roles. He touches upon the historical context of the Pharisees and the Sadducees, explaining their respective attitudes toward the messianic promise and the interpretation of the law.
He concludes by reiterating the absolute necessity of maintaining the integrity of the faith, warning that the modern tendency to distort spiritual truths for worldly accommodation is a dangerous error. He reminds the students that the life of the soul depends entirely on the reception of the sacraments and a constant adherence to the objective truth revealed by God. He ends by urging the audience to remain vigilant against the corrupting influences that seek to undermine the traditional understanding of the Church's mission and the salvific nature of the Gospel.

John 7: Do Not Judge According to Appearances
Bishop Williamson opens this lecture on John 7 by discussing the instruction not to judge by appearances, but to judge with righteous judgment. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the true nature of Christ beyond the outward perception held by those who sought to kill Him. The lecture begins with a context of the tensions in Jerusalem and the skepticism surrounding the identity of the Nazarene, setting the stage for an analysis of how the authorities and the crowds misunderstood His divine mission.
Moving through the text, Williamson addresses the confusion of the people regarding the origin of the Christ, noting that while they knew where Jesus was from, they did not know where He truly came from. He cites Micah 5:2 and Malachi 3:2 as scriptural foundations for understanding the mystery of the Messiah's coming. He discusses the nature of the Pharisees' opposition, the role of the temple guards who were struck by His teaching, and the internal division among the people. The lecture delves into the concept of a syllogism in logic, using it as a tool to examine the flawed reasoning of the Jewish leaders. He also mentions the historical context of the Middle Ages, comparing it to the current state of the Church, and reflects on the persistence of human sin and the necessity of divine intervention through the grace of God.
He concludes the session by reflecting on the nature of the Church throughout history, characterizing it as a series of ages that rise and fall. He reminds the students that the Church is currently in a period of decline, but emphasizes that this is not a permanent state. He ends by urging the listeners to remain faithful, noting that the ultimate destiny of the Church is in the hands of God, and that even in times of trial, the grace provided is sufficient for those who persevere.

John 7: Teaching at the Feast of Tabernacles
The Bishop begins this session on John 7 by discussing the timing of Jesus' arrival at the Feast of Tabernacles. He addresses the reaction of the Jewish authorities to Jesus' teaching, specifically noting their astonishment at his knowledge of scripture despite his lack of formal training in Jewish schools. He contrasts this with the background of Saul of Tarsus, noting that while St. Paul had received a formal Jewish education, Jesus had not, which served to highlight the divine source of His wisdom.
He then proceeds to analyze the crowd's reaction, focusing on the question of how Jesus could possess such knowledge without having studied. The Bishop discusses the population of Jerusalem at the time, arguing that it was smaller and more interconnected than many modern listeners assume, which makes the crowd's familiarity with Jesus and his background more plausible. He addresses the notion of the Messiah and the confusion among the people regarding Jesus' origins and his authority. Throughout the lecture, he emphasizes the necessity of understanding the cultural and religious context of first-century Judea, including the roles of the scribes, Pharisees, and the general populace. He also touches upon the nature of miracles and the skepticism faced by Jesus from those who demanded signs as proof of his divine mission.
He concludes the session by reflecting on the nature of truth and the resistance it encounters from those who are unwilling to accept it. He reminds the students that the message of Christ is not a human invention but a divine revelation, and that the opposition Jesus faced is a recurring theme in the history of the Church. He ends by urging the seminarians to remain steadfast in their commitment to the faith, regardless of the criticism or misunderstanding they may encounter in their own ministries.
