Election is over. But Should Your Retirement Depend on What Happens Next?
Democrats won both chambers of Congress, and Wall Street had an interesting reaction. The S&P 500 rose as much as 1.7% in early trading. But some AI stocks fell, while Treasury bonds and gold attracted buyers. Same election. Very different reactions. Why? Because Wall Street isn’t simply reacting to which political party wins. It’s trying to figure out whose profits could be affected. Over the past few years, major technology companies have spent billions building AI data centers. That spending has benefited chipmakers, server manufacturers, energy companies, and the entire AI infrastructure industry. But now investors are asking a new question. Could Democrats push for tighter regulations on data centers? These facilities consume enormous amounts of electricity. And communities are increasingly concerned about whether ordinary households will end up paying higher utility bills to support AI expansion. If new regulations delay construction or increase electricity costs, some AI companies could face serious financial pressure. Especially companies that borrowed heavily to finance their expansion. Think about it. A company borrows billions to build data centers, expecting them to generate revenue within three years. But what happens if construction gets delayed? Revenue gets delayed. Expenses increase. And interest payments don’t stop. That’s why AI can still have an extraordinary future while individual AI stocks struggle. Now look at Treasury bonds. With Democrats controlling Congress, some of the president’s proposed tax cuts or spending initiatives could face greater opposition. Investors are reassessing what that might mean for government borrowing, economic growth, and interest rates. That helps explain why Treasury prices rose as yields declined. But here’s what I find most important about this story. This is just one election. Over the next ten years, we’ll have more elections, more policy changes, more interest-rate decisions, and probably several market corrections. AI could continue booming. Or it could go through a painful downturn. Nobody knows exactly what’s coming. But if you’re around 60 and planning to retire in the next three to five years, I think there’s a much more important question than where the market goes next. Do you really want every election, every market correction, and every interest-rate decision to determine whether you can afford to retire? Imagine you’re 60 years old with $1.5 million in your 401(k). You’ve worked hard, saved consistently, and planned to retire at 63. Then, at 62, the market drops 20%. Your account falls to $1.2 million. Suddenly, you’re asking yourself: Should I work another two years? Should I cut my retirement budget? Should I cancel the trips I’ve been planning? Maybe I shouldn’t retire at all. The problem isn’t just that you lost $300,000 on paper. The problem is that one market downturn could change the next ten years of your life. And that’s exactly what retirement planning should try to prevent. When you’re younger, your primary financial goal is usually to grow your assets. But as you approach retirement, the goal needs to expand. You still need growth. But you also need a way to fund your life without depending entirely on what the stock market does next. Start with your essential monthly expenses. How much will Social Security cover? Do you have a pension? What’s the remaining income gap? Then consider which sources of reliable income could help cover that gap, including guaranteed lifetime income options when appropriate. Next, make sure you have enough accessible reserves for upcoming expenses, so you’re less likely to be forced to sell investments during a market downturn. And keep a portion of your assets invested for long-term growth, because retirement could last another 25 or 30 years. None of this eliminates uncertainty. Inflation, taxes, healthcare costs, and unexpected life events still matter. But it can reduce the chances that a bad year on Wall Street forces you to change your retirement date or your lifestyle. You can still invest in AI. You can still follow the Federal Reserve. You can still care about election results. But you shouldn’t have to check the stock market every morning just to feel confident that next month’s bills will be paid. That’s the real lesson I take from this election. The world will always be uncertain. Your retirement plan should be designed to withstand as much of that uncertainty as reasonably possible. Because at 60, the goal isn’t to predict every market move. It’s to build a retirement that doesn’t fall apart every time the world changes. Medicare introduced AI-assisted prior authorization, and some medical procedures dropped by nearly 20%!
Medicare introduced AI-assisted prior authorization, and some medical procedures dropped by nearly 20%! But were unnecessary treatments eliminated, or did patients face new barriers to getting the care they needed? A new study raises important questions about the future of Original Medicare, access to treatment, and what retirees should consider when choosing healthcare coverage. Because having Medicare coverage doesn’t always guarantee easy access to care. AI could change the world. But does that mean AI stocks will make investors rich?
Even if AI companies deliver extraordinary growth, investors could still lose money if expectations are already priced into their stocks. For those approaching retirement, there’s an even bigger risk: What happens if your investments need another decade to pay off, but your retirement bills start arriving next year? The real question isn’t just whether AI will succeed. It’s whether your retirement income can afford to wait. 📌 Book a 1:1 Retirement Structure Review to explore how your retirement income and investments fit together.
