How Hollywood’s Stereotypes about Africa Are Costing Us More Than We Think | Ep. 25 Akunna Cook
The Africa Akunna Cook knew growing up in Nigeria was very different from the Africa she saw portrayed on American television. Years later, as a U.S. diplomat, she would discover that those same stereotypes were influencing investment decisions and shaping how the world viewed the continent.
Now, as founder of Next Narrative Africa, Akunna is working to change who gets to tell African stories, who gets to finance them and which stories make it to our screens.
In this episode of Black & Borderless, we discuss Africa’s global image, Hollywood’s influence, the financing challenges facing African filmmakers and the growing international demand for African content. We also explore an important question: how do we tell more complete stories about Africa without limiting creative freedom?
Because changing Africa’s narrative isn't just about telling different stories. It's about building an ecosystem that allows those stories to exist.

Bob & Rita Marley’s Dream vs. Their Grandaughter’s Reality | Ep. 24 Donisha Prendergast
What does it mean to inherit a revolutionary legacy while refusing to be defined by it?
In this episode of Black & Borderless: The Legacy Series, we speak with Donisha Prendergast — filmmaker, actress, activist and granddaughter of Bob and Rita Marley — about identity, rebellion and the responsibility of carrying a family legacy into a new generation.
Donisha reflects on growing up in the Marley family, her grandmother Rita Marley's influence, and her determination to tell stories on her own terms. She discusses her film Threads of Us, the challenges facing Jamaican filmmakers, and why preserving culture requires creating space for our own stories.
We also explore Africa and the diaspora, the complexities of belonging, and the difference between romanticising a return to Africa and understanding the realities of reconnecting with the continent.
A conversation about inherited history, self-definition and the courage to write your own chapter.
This is Black & Borderless: The Legacy Series.
