The science behind Black and brown skin — translated into routines that actually work. Hosted by cosmetic scientists and formulators, the Black Skin Science Podcast goes beyond viral trends — into the biology, the evidence, and the formulation science behind clinical research for melanin-rich skin. We cover hyperpigmentation, melasma, acne, exfoliation, sunscreen, retinoids, the skin barrier, and ingredients that actually work for your skin biology — the questions most skincare content never asks. New episodes weekly.
The Cosmetic Chemist's Guide to Exfoliating Black & Brown Skin
Chemical exfoliation for Black and Brown skin is not the same question as chemical exfoliation in general. The same acid at the same percentage can give someone a visible glow and give someone with melanin-rich skin a dark mark that outlasts the problem they were treating.
In this episode, we break down why. We get into the three acid families, AHAs including glycolic, lactic, and mandelic acid, BHAs including salicylic acid, and PHAs for the most reactive skin, and explain what each one actually does, how deep it reaches, and who should start where. We cover the pH truth that most label percentages don't tell you: a 5% acid at the right pH typically outperforms a 10% at the wrong one, and formulators raise the pH on purpose for reasons that matter. We explain why irritation from over-exfoliating activates the same pigmentation pathway as any other injury on melanin-rich skin, and why the minimum effective dose is always the correct frame for this audience, not the maximum tolerable dose. We close with frequency, what not to combine, and how to check whether your routine is accidentally stacking acid-load without you realising.

How to Get Glass Skin for Black & Brown Skin | Science-Backed
Glass skin is not a ten-step routine. It's a hydration problem, specifically whether your skin is holding water and stopping it from escaping through the barrier.
In this episode we build the actual routine for getting there. We get into the two real reasons skin looks dull, rough, or oily and dehydrated at the same time, and why pore size is real but isn't actually the obstacle people think it is. We cover what has to happen first if your barrier is compromised or you're dealing with active acne, before any hydration routine will hold. Then we build the real thing: the full humectant lineup including osmolytes like ectoin, occlusives and ceramides and the order they actually go on in, and two double-duty hero actives, azelaic acid and lactic acid, that each do two jobs at once. We close with gentle exfoliation paced to your skin's real turnover cycle, why heavy occlusive formulas usually aren't the actual problem, and the ingredient-stacking mistake that can quietly overload your routine without you noticing.

The Only Skincare Routine Black & Brown Skin Actually Needs
If your skincare routine has more than five products and your skin still is not where you want it, the problem may not be the products. It may be the architecture. Most people of colour were sold a stack of treatments to fix problems a properly built system would have prevented.
In this episode we build the actual structure of a skincare routine for Black and Brown skin from the ground up. Every product you own is doing one of three jobs.

The SPF Number Is Lying to You | Sunscreen Science for Black & Brown Skin
Most people choose sunscreen by one number: SPF. But SPF is essentially a sunburn stopwatch — it measures how long until your skin shows a visible reaction to UV, and that test was calibrated around a signal that is much quieter on darker skin. So the biggest number on the bottle tells you almost nothing about the damage that actually matters for melanin-rich skin.
In this episode we read the back of the bottle instead of the front. We get into why UV is only about 5% of sunlight, what the other 95% — visible light and infrared heat — is doing to your collagen and firmness, and why "Black don't crack" is only half the story.
We cover the SPF stopwatch and who the test was built for, the anti-aging and free radical claims sunscreen brands lean on, UVA vs UVB and the damage you accumulate without burning, the PA rating and UVA mark hiding in the small print, broad spectrum, iron oxides and tinted sunscreen for visible light protection, why Korean and Asian formulations often sit better on deep skin, and a simple back-of-bottle checklist for choosing sunscreen for Black skin.

Is It Even Acne? | The Diagnosis Most Black Women Never Get
Is it even acne? If your routine has not worked in six months, there are only two possibilities. Either it is not acne. Or you are treating the wrong type of acne.
Rosacea, fungal acne, closed comedones, and perioral dermatitis all look like acne on darker skin. Every month spent treating the wrong condition means more irritation, more inflammation, and more post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Today we start where most acne content never does. The diagnosis.
From there, we break down the four root causes of real acne, excess sebum, abnormal shedding, C. acnes bacterial overgrowth, and the inflammation that triggers hyperpigmentation in melanin-rich skin specifically. Then the treatment ladder, from mild to moderate to severe, with the evidence for azelaic acid, salicylic acid, niacinamide, benzoyl peroxide, and adapalene for darker skin specifically. Where chemical peels actually belong in the journey. The biggest mistakes Black women make with acne routines. And a week by week roadmap from barrier repair to clear skin.

Barrier Damage in Black Skin | Stop Acne, Sensitivity & Dullness
If your skincare routine has stopped working — products stinging, skin getting oilier, dark spots returning despite treatment — the problem is almost certainly not the products. It is the barrier those products are supposed to work on.
This episode covers the skin barrier: what it actually is, what damages it specifically in Black and brown skin, and the reset protocol that lets it recover.
🔬 What we cover:
— The 5 most common causes of barrier damage including things the industry actively sells you— The exact ingredients to look for: ceramides, petrolatum, bifida ferment lysate, and more— The reintroduction timeline — when to bring actives back without undoing the repair

Ethnicity-Specific Hyperpigmentation Ingredients | What Works for Black & Brown Skin
Most hyperpigmentation guides were built on research that didn't center Black and Brown skin. The ingredient that works best for your dark spots depends partly on your ethnicity — and most skincare content never tells you that.
In this episode we go through the evidence with that filter applied. Which ingredients have strong data for skin like ours. Which ones carry specific risks for darker skin that the research doesn't flag prominently. And the routine structure to use them without breaking your barrier in the process.
If you haven't listened to Part 1 — The 3-Stage System — start there first. The biology of how dark spots form makes this episode significantly more useful. The ONE Science-Backed Rule for Dark Spots Every Black Woman Should Know | Hyperpigmentation routine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrXUDQNotRY)
🔬 What we cover:
— Why mainstream ingredient lists are incomplete for melanin-rich skin— Hydroquinone vs Tretinoin: the burst treatment safety profile— Trigger matching: how to choose actives for melasma vs post-acne PIH— The one-at-a-time introduction schedule to protect your skin barrier— Pregnancy-safe hyperpigmentation routines that actually work
If you are pregnant or planning to be — do not skip the pregnancy section. The ingredient picture changes significantly and we cover it directly.

The ONE Science-Backed Rule for Dark Spots Every Black Woman Should Know | Hyperpigmentation routine
Hyperpigmentation on Black skin is not random. It follows a predictable three-stage biological chain reaction: Production, Transfer, and Deposition. Most routines fail because they only address one stage, leaving the "warehouse" full of pigment ready to move to the surface. In Part 1 of our hyperpigmentation series, we deconstruct the "Map" of a dark spot and provide the clinical framework needed to interrupt it.🎙️ Subscribe for Part 2: Where we dive into the clinical evidence of what works best for Black Skin.If you value the evidence-based approach of clinical channels like Doctorly, this show provides the specific scientific deep-dive required for Black skin.
