Anfang Dezember wird die 30 jährige Schwedin Annie Börjesson tot an einem Strand in Schottland gefunden. Für die Polizei ist der Fall schnell klar: die junge Frau, die seit einem knappen Jahr in Edinbourgh lebt, hat Suizid begangen. Schnell finden sich zahlreiche Widersprüche zu dieser Theorie, denen jedoch nicht nachgegangen wird. Auch eine unglaubliche Verschwörungstheorie entsteht. Hat etwa die CIA mit dem Tod der jungen Frau zu tun?

Im kanadischen Touristenort Banff kennt man Gewaltverbrechen bestenfalls aus Romanen oder dem TV. Die Einwohner kennen und vertrauen einander, niemand schließt seine Haustüre ab. All das ändert sich schlagartig, als in einer Nacht im Mai die 23 jährige Taxifahrerin Lucie Turmel grausam ermordet wird. Jeder mochte die quirlige junge Frau, es gibt keine Hinweise auf den Täter. Hartnäckige und kreative Polizeiarbeit bringt schließlich Licht ins Dunkel.
