如願以償登上霸主之位，楚莊王卻陷入了深深的憂慮。楚國繁榮盛世之下，隱藏的重重危機困擾著他。中原化的負面效果，已開始潛移默化地影響楚國霸業的延續。最為致命的是人才選拔機制的缺陷，導致了楚國可用之材極度匱乏。一天，楚莊王在宮中召集大臣開會。與每次會議一樣相同，楚莊王提出一個問題，大臣總是在那面面相覷，沒有人能拿出高明的見解。 最後總是楚莊王一言而決，大臣們紛紛稱讚君主決策高明。但是退朝之後，楚莊王卻深深嘆了一口氣。大臣就問他說，大王今天的會議開得很順利，您嘆什麽氣？楚莊王回答，一個國家能否持續興盛發展，關鍵是看能不能持續不斷地出現賢才。你看楚國的政治現狀，每次都是靠我一個人來決策，一旦我不在了，楚國會變成什麽樣呢？

20200128 楚國八百年4 稱霸- 止戈為武
楚莊王說，現在我們讓兩國的子弟暴屍荒野，這個是一種殘暴的行為。在這場戰爭中陣亡的這些晉國將士都是為國家盡忠的。我怎麽能夠用他們的屍體建築京觀。所以楚莊王下令，把這些晉國陣亡將士的屍體妥加埋葬，並在黃河邊上祭祀了河神，然後就退軍了。 對於武力，楚莊王有著自己獨到的見解。他說，"武"字是由"止"和"戈"兩字合成的，真正的消滅暴亂是永遠停止動用武力，止戈為武，這才是真正的武功。楚莊王這個富於哲理的答案，標志著楚國政治文化不但超越了楚成王時代，也走在了整個華夏文化的前列。 邲之戰後，楚國聲威大震，魯、宋、鄭、陳等中原小國，相繼背棄晉國，依附楚國。晉國一時不敢南下與楚抗衡。楚國已經實至名歸，成為了諸侯國中最強的主導力量。楚國信守仁義的舉動更是贏得了各國的一致歸心。到了楚莊王的下一代，楚國的國事已經無人能敵。公元前493年，60多歲的孔子帶著幾十名弟子來到出楚國葉邑，孔子見到了當地地方官葉公，並接受葉公問政。孔子對楚莊王不吝讚美之詞，他說楚莊王是春秋時代罕見的，幾乎各方面都符合儒家理想的君主。

20200116 楚國八百年4 稱霸- 莊王的改革
20世紀70年代，考古學家在河南淅川下寺發現了大批春秋中晚期的楚國墓葬，和以前發現的那些楚墓有所不同。 這裏出土的陪葬品不僅種類豐富，而且不再一味模仿中原，甚至強烈地表現出楚文化的獨特性。這一切恰恰證明了在楚莊王統治前後，楚國國力不斷強盛，文化也趨向發達。要登上霸權的巔峰！楚莊王知道，除了強大的國家實力外，文化、道德、禮儀這樣的軟實力是讓楚國騰飛的另外一只翅膀，楚莊王開始籌劃自己的宏偉藍圖，在上層社會，楚莊王大力推行中原化，他參考中原禮法傳統，重新制定楚國宮廷禮儀制度。 除了實施符合中原禮法的制度，楚莊王還號召楚國貴族深入學習中原文化，並且自己身體力行。楚莊王時代之後，楚國使者在外交場合已經能像中原國家大臣一樣，純熟地引用詩經進行交際與交流。
