More Than Mental Toughness: How Morgan Kane-Brons Is Changing the Way Athletes Handle Pressure

What happens when an athlete is physically prepared for competition but mentally unprepared for the moment? In this episode of the Bound for Greatness Podcast, host Scott Garvis sits down with Morgan Kane Brons, founder of Winning Edge Coaching and former Iowa State women’s basketball player, to explore why mental performance training must become part of everyday athletic development. Morgan shares her journey from arriving at Iowa State as a highly successful high school athlete to struggling with perfectionism, self-doubt and the pressure of Division I basketball. After redshirting and questioning whether she belonged, Morgan learned practical mental-performance strategies that helped her rebuild her confidence, respond to mistakes and eventually start in a Big 12 championship game. Today, she helps middle school, high school and college athletes strengthen the mental skills required to perform under pressure. Scott and Morgan discuss how coaches can intentionally develop athlete confidence, improve self-talk and create a team culture built around resilience, accountability and ownership. Morgan also provides actionable strategies coaches can immediately integrate into practices and competition, including visualization, process-based goals, team reset words, “I am” statements, journaling and the ESP reflection method: effort, success and progress. This conversation also examines the role parents play in reinforcing confidence and mental resilience during the car ride home and around the dinner table. If you are an athletic director, coach, parent or student-athlete, this episode will help you understand why mental toughness is not something an athlete either has or does not have. Confidence, focus, resilience and composure are skills that can be taught, practiced and strengthened. Do not wait until an athlete begins struggling to develop the mental side of the game. Train it. Practice it. Reinforce it. Because pressure is coming, and the strongest athletes are prepared for everything happening between their ears. Playing Time, Transfers and Pressure: The New Reality of High School Sports

What happens when playing time, transfer culture, social media and college recruiting expectations begin to overshadow the true purpose of high school sports? In this episode of the Bound for Greatness Podcast, host Scott Garvis sits down with Brandon Ecker, Athletic Director at ITOWN Prep, for an honest conversation about the growing pressure surrounding education-based athletics. Drawing from more than two decades in education and 18 years as an athletic administrator, Ecker examines the challenges facing high school athletic directors, coaches, parents and student-athletes. He explains why playing-time disputes often begin with broken communication, how unrealistic scholarship expectations affect families and why transferring schools does not always solve the underlying problem. The conversation also explores the impact of social media and personal branding on youth sports. As parents invest in highlight videos, recruiting exposure and public promotion, leaders must help young athletes pursue opportunities without allowing attention, comparison or ego to replace character development. Garvis and Ecker discuss practical strategies athletic departments can use to reduce parent conflict, including establishing a clear chain of command, requiring athletes to participate in meetings, communicating program expectations before the season and supporting coaches while still holding them accountable. Most importantly, Ecker reminds listeners that young athletes are not commodities. High school sports should provide controlled adversity, honest feedback, meaningful relationships and life lessons that extend far beyond the scoreboard. This episode is essential listening for athletic directors, coaches, school administrators, parents and anyone invested in protecting the future of high school sports. Topics include: • Parent behavior in high school sports • Playing-time conflicts and communication • High school transfer culture • College recruiting and scholarship expectations • Social media and student-athlete branding • Athletic director leadership • Supporting and developing coaches • Building a values-based athletic program • Protecting education-based athletics • Creating a positive student-athlete experience Listen to discover how strong leadership, honest communication and clearly defined expectations can help schools protect the game behind the game and preserve what makes education-based athletics worth saving.

The Future of Youth Sports Starts With Coaches

The future of youth sports starts with coaches. In this episode of the Bound for Greatness podcast, host Scott Garvis sits down with Dr. Samantha Bates and Dr. Dawn Anderson-Butcher from The Ohio State University to discuss the U.S. National Coaches Survey and why every coach’s voice matters. The National Coaches Survey is designed to gather actionable data from youth, recreational, club, high school and college coaches across the country. The findings will help athletic directors, school districts, state athletic associations, parks and recreation programs and national sports organizations make better decisions about coach education, professional development, mental health, recruitment, retention and athlete well-being. The first national survey heard from more than 10,000 coaches across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Its findings revealed several urgent issues affecting coaching and youth sports: • One in three coaches did not feel confident supporting athlete mental health and mental performance • Seventy-six percent wanted additional training beyond the X’s and O’s • Seventy-seven percent of coaches working with children ages 5 to 10 identified winning as a top priority • Many school districts may now have more community-based coaches than teacher-coaches • Coaches are experiencing growing levels of stress, pressure and burnout Scott, Dr. Bates and Dr. Anderson-Butcher explore how the youth sports landscape is changing, why young athletes are leaving sports, how specialization and rising costs affect families and what coaches need to create healthier athletic experiences. They also share the powerful story of an overwhelmed student-athlete who told his coach, “I’m chasing after the bus.” Because the coach had received mental-health training, he recognized the message, responded with “Tell me more,” and connected the athlete with additional support. Coaches do not need to become therapists. They do need the knowledge, confidence and resources to recognize when an athlete is struggling and connect that young person with caring adults who can help. This conversation examines: • Coaching burnout and coach retention • Athlete mental health and sports participation • Youth sports specialization and rising costs • Why athletes need belonging, confidence and appropriate autonomy • How coaches can create competitive environments without sacrificing joy • The relationship between sports burnout and depression • How data can improve coaching education and professional development • Why athletic directors must listen to the people working directly with athletes • How the National Coaches Survey can strengthen education-based athletics The new U.S. National Coaches Survey is intended to give leaders access to national, state and local data they can use to identify strengths, address urgent needs and build better experiences for coaches and athletes. If you coach at any level, your experience matters. Take the National Coaches Survey using the link in the show notes, then share it with every coach in your school, organization, community and professional network. Listen now. Take the survey. Share it with another coach. Every coach has a story. Every coach’s voice matters. Let’s make sure America hears them.
