South Melbourne's latest pitch for A-League inclusion
Ahead of the Australia Cup final against Melbourne Victory, South Melbourne president Bill Papastergiadis joins Matt Windley in an expansive interview with the Building Blocks podcast.
We discuss:
South wants to be a trailblazer for other NPL clubs to follow it into the A-League when they are ready to do so;
The club had doubled its financial turnover since entering the Australian Championship and Oceania Pro League and would expect to have to “at least double that again” to compete in the A-League;
The intention is for South Melbourne to retain its majority member-owned status, but said the club was exploring mechanisms to appropriately ingest private capital into the club should its A-League bid succeed;
There is scope to add grandstands to the north and south ends of Lakeside Stadium, where the club needs only 1500 attendees to breakeven per home game;
South would insist on hosting derbies against Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City at Lakeside Stadium; and,
The intention is to keep playing in the OFC Pro League and the NPL if admitted into the A-League.
