Met zijn betoverende ogen, bolle kop en relatief dikke verenpak is de steenuil een graag geziene verschijning op het platteland. Maar de kleinst broedende uilensoort van Nederland heeft het moeilijk. Sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog is de populatie met meer dan de helft afgenomen. Van de 25.000 paartjes leven er nu nog maar zo'n 8.000 à 9.500 in ons land. Vogelbescherming Nederland heeft de steenuil dan ook als 'kwetsbaar' bestempeld op de Rode Lijst voor broedvogels. "Als we niet ingrijpen komt de populatie in gevaar."

De das op de Veluwe zit in de problemen. Dankzij verschillende oorzaken heeft hij steeds meer moeite om aan zijn favoriete maaltje te komen: de regenworm. Ecoloog Jaap Schröder van Valouwe Natuur houdt al tientallen jaren zo'n veertig dassenburchten in de gaten op de West-Veluwe. "Waar het relatief gezien hartstikke goed gaat met de das in Nederland is het juist verontrustend gesteld met de populatie op de Veluwe. Tussen 1995 en 2020 is de populatie daar met zo'n dertig procent afgenomen."

Valentijnsdag nadert met rasse schreden. Het voorjaar hangt in de lucht, maar verspreid zich ook onder de grond. Want daar ploeteren mannetjesmollen zich een slag in de rondte. Kriskras graven ze gangenstelsels in de ultieme hoop een vrouwtje tegen te komen om mee te paren. Die molshopen zijn als stille getuigen van de romantiek de perfecte graadmeter om te kijken hoe het gaat met de mol. En daarom wordt dit weekend de jaarlijkse mollentelling gehouden.
