So yeah, C -Make is a terrible mess like I like to say and everything I learned about it was against my will. My advice is to use C -Make presets. They are supported by VS Code out of the box. And if you make C -Make presets sort of the first, the first rate citizen of your build, the source of truth that gives you the ability to repeat builds both from the terminal and from VS Code.
