MALACHI 3: How Have We Broken Covenant

Ever sang worship songs inside a church building, walked out the front door, and immediately got into a parking lot wrestling match that landed you in an ant bed and the ER? It's easy to look like we have it all together in a church chair, but our parking lot behavior usually reveals where our hearts really are. In Part Three of our Malachi series, we dive into Malachi 2:10–16 to talk about fake faith, broken covenants, and why God cares just as much about our horizontal relationships as He does our vertical worship. It is dangerously simple to go through the motions of faith—raising our hands, singing the songs, and nodding along on Sunday mornings—only to act deceitfully toward the people in our lives by Sunday afternoon. In the third disputation of the book, Malachi 2:10–16 confronts a community that was weeping at God's altar while actively betraying their spouses, gossiping about their neighbors, and breaking covenant promises. In this message, we unpack the Hebrew word for "treacherously," which literally means to cloak oneself in deceit. Spiritual drift doesn't just happen by accident; it is the result of active choices where we guard our comfort rather than our hearts. Through strong warnings on relational integrity, marriage, and how we treat those made in God's image, Malachi reminds us that God refuses to accept vertical worship from hands that are busy tearing down horizontal relationships. Key Takeaways: The Parking Lot Ant Bed: A hilarious and sobering teenage memory of singing praises in church only to fight in an ant bed minutes later—showing the stark contrast between "Sunday faith" and daily behavior. Cloaked in Treachery: Understanding the biblical definition of acting "treacherously" (used five times in six verses) and why spiritual drift is an active choice, not a passive accident. Vertical Worship vs. Horizontal Integrity: Why singing songs and giving offerings means nothing to God if we are tearing down our spouses, family members, or neighbors in daily life. Guarding the Covenant: Unpacking Malachi's heavy warnings regarding the "wife of your youth," relational neglect, and why guarding your heart is the only way to prevent relational drift. Primary Scripture: Malachi 2:10–16 Supporting Passages: Deuteronomy 6:4–5, Proverbs 4:23, Matthew 5:23–24, 1 John 4:20

MALACHI 2: How Have We Shown Contempt

Picking up in Malachi 1:6 through 2:9, God confronts the priests and His people with a piercing question: If I am a Father, where is My honor? Instead of bringing God the firstfruits of their lives, the people were bringing defective, blind, and lame animals to the altar—handing God their scraps while keeping the best for themselves. In this convicting message, we unpack the truth that when God gets our leftovers, He doesn't have our heart. Whether it’s squeezing God into the final five minutes of a packed schedule, giving Him leftover pocket change after our non-essentials, or coasting on past spiritual achievements, we often treat God's table with contempt. Looking through the lens of 1 Peter 2:9, believers today are called a "royal priesthood". How we honor God's name with our time, attention, and resources directly shows a watching world what Jesus is truly worth. Key Takeaways: The Pink Glitter Candle: A personal story about regifting an unwanted White Elephant gift to save money for food and movies—illustrating how easily we hoard our best for ourselves and hand God our scraps. Scraps Over Firstfruits: Exploring how screen time, tight schedules, and leftover budgets creep into daily life, and why a sacrifice that costs us nothing fails to honor God. The Royal Priesthood: Understanding our identity as priests in Christ who represent God to the world—and asking whether our daily lives demonstrate that His name is precious or worthless. The "Governor" Test: Applying Malachi’s challenge: If we offered our boss, spouse, or government the same leftover energy and minimum effort we give God, would they accept it? Primary Scripture: Malachi 1:6–2:9 Supporting Passages: Genesis 4:3–5, Deuteronomy 15:19–21, 1 Peter 2:9

MALACHI 1: How Have You Loved Us

Ever ended up with a gargantuan, counter-sized bag of flour delivered to your house when you only meant to order a small bag? Life has a funny way of dropping circumstances on our doorstep that look nothing like what we ordered. In this opening message of our series on Malachi, we dive into Malachi 1:1–5 to explore what happens when cynicism creeps into our faith and we find ourselves asking God, 'How have You actually loved us?' Standing on the edge of 400 years of divine silence, the book of Malachi opens with a heavy burden for a weary people. A century after returning from exile and rebuilding the temple, Israel was frustrated, disappointed, and wrestling with unmet expectations. Their lives didn't look like the prosperous picture they thought God promised, leading them to question His love in Malachi 1:1–5 and treat their faith like a business transaction. In this foundational teaching, we explore how cynicism quietly grows in the gap between our current circumstances and what God is actually doing behind the scenes. By breaking down Malachi 1:1–5 and contrasting human contracts with biblical covenants, this message challenges us to stop letting our daily "weather" define God's character. God's love isn't a return on investment conditioned on our performance—it is an unbreakable, unconditional covenant proven once and for all through Jesus Christ. Key Takeaways: The Accidental Flour Order: A hilarious story about accidentally ordering a massive, shelf-busting bag of flour, serving as a visual for how easily our plans get overwhelmed by unexpected reality. Cynicism in the Gap: Why questioning God during dark seasons isn't forbidden, but how unaddressed disappointment can curdle into cynicism when we judge God's heart strictly by our present situations. Contract vs. Covenant: A deep dive into the difference between a contract ("as long as my needs are met") and a biblical covenant ("as long as we both shall live"), showing why God's commitment to us has no exit strategy. "Jacob I Loved, Esau I Hated": Unpacking the covenantal language of Malachi 1:2–3 to understand divine choice, unearned grace, and the absolute security of being in God's family. Primary Scripture: Malachi 1:1–5 Supporting Passages: Genesis 25:29–34, Psalm 73:12–17, Romans 5:8
