[…] This hit at a time when Americans were trying to figure out what their future was. Half the states were were slave. The other half were free. Suddenly, the most distant part of the new western half of the country becomes an instant state, has the population. What to do about it? And so I began to see that the gold rush of was much more than gold. It instigated, you could say, lit the long fuse to what would become the Civil War. And so I felt I needed to put the gold rush in that larger context. I want to talk about the Civil War part of it and slavery in a minute, but the other thing that the gold rush ushered in was this idea of the ability to get rich quick. […]
