Remember and Obey: Avoid Abominations to the Lord

In this episode, we examine biblical “abominations”—practices God identifies as defiling, detestable, and incompatible with holy living. Beginning in Deuteronomy, the message contrasts the religious customs surrounding Israel with God’s call for His people to remain distinct, sincere, and wholly devoted to Him. Through examples including blemished sacrifices, pagan worship, child sacrifice, divination, astrology, witchcraft, necromancy, and the tragic reign of Manasseh, this study shows that God does not accept worship shaped by the world’s standards. Instead, He calls His people to bring Him what is pure, consecrated, and fitting for His service. The episode also considers Deuteronomy 22:5 alongside the creation account in Genesis, emphasizing God’s intentional design of humanity as male and female. Rather than focusing merely on changing styles of clothing, the message addresses the larger biblical principle of honoring God’s created order rather than deliberately producing or embracing confusion about it. Ultimately, this sermon calls believers to examine every area of life—our worship, choices, bodies, identity, and outward testimony—and to live as vessels “meet for the master’s use,” prepared for every good work.

   Remember and Obey: Familial Instructions

Marriage, Parenthood, and Dealing with Evil in the Home is a thoughtful study of Deuteronomy 21:10–23, exploring how God’s righteousness is meant to shape life within the home, the family, and the wider covenant community. Though the passage addresses difficult situations—including war, marriage, inheritance, rebellion, judgment, and death—it reveals a consistent biblical concern: God restrains human power, protects the vulnerable, establishes justice, and calls His people to confront evil seriously. This message begins with God’s care for a captive woman, highlighting the protections built into the law for her grief, dignity, and liberty. It considers the responsibility of husbands to love with compassion and honor, and it examines the certainty of inheritance rights within Israel’s covenant life. The sermon then turns to the sobering warning of persistent rebellion in the home. Deuteronomy’s instructions reveal that rebellion against godly authority is never merely private; it affects families, communities, and our relationship with God. Parents are encouraged to pair truth, correction, and courageous confrontation with the compassion that welcomes genuine repentance. Finally, the message follows Deuteronomy 21:23 to the cross of Christ. The declaration that “cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree” becomes the bridge to Galatians 3:13, where we see the heart of the gospel: Jesus, the perfectly obedient Son, bore the curse deserved by rebellious sinners. At Calvary, God’s justice was satisfied, forgiveness was made available, and hope was offered to every husband, wife, parent, child, and home. Scripture references include Deuteronomy 21:10–23, Deuteronomy 13:6–11, Exodus 20:12, Proverbs 1:7 and 29:1, Ephesians 5:25, 1 Peter 3:7, Hebrews 12:10–11, Luke 15, Isaiah 53:6, and Galatians 3:13.

   Genesis: The Abiding Place

Isaac’s Desire to Abide examines Genesis 26:12–25 and the way God used conflict, displacement, and uncertainty to lead Isaac toward a place of peace and fruitfulness. After fear had led Isaac to compromise in Gerar, this passage reveals a changed response: rather than fighting to preserve every well or secure his own future, Isaac trusted God to make room for him. As the Philistines disputed the wells of Esek and Sitnah, Isaac chose to move forward in faith. At Rehoboth, he recognized that the Lord—not Isaac’s striving—had made room for him and would make him fruitful. The message also considers God’s renewed promises at Beersheba: His presence, peace, blessing, and multiplication. Isaac’s response provides a powerful pattern for believers today. When God spoke, Isaac built an altar, called on the Lord, pitched his tent, and dug a well. He worshiped, settled, and abided where God had led him. This episode encourages us not to confuse opposition with abandonment, but to trust that God may use seasons of contention to direct us toward the place He has prepared. Scripture references include Genesis 26:12–25, Genesis 12:2, Genesis 26:3, Psalm 91:1–4, and 1 Peter 1:6–9.
