1 Corinthians 16:13-24 - How to Strengthen a Church
What does it actually look like to build a strong, healthy church? The answer is more practical than most people expect. Drawing from the closing chapter of 1 Corinthians, Paul delivers five commands that form the foundation of a thriving church community. Believers are called to be watchful and alert, to stand firm in sound Christian doctrine, to be courageous rather than passive, to draw their strength from God rather than themselves, and to let everything they do be motivated by love. These are not suggestions for a select few. They are the calling of every believer, and when taken seriously, they produce the kind of church that is both spiritually healthy and genuinely life-giving.
Paul also highlights the importance of honoring faithful servants within the church. Real leaders are not those who chase platforms or positions. They are the ones already quietly serving and loving the people around them. The household of Stephanus is held up as an example worth following, people who devoted themselves to the ministry of others. Alongside this, Paul emphasizes the value of genuine fellowship. The early church was deeply connected, and that connection was not a program. It was a way of life. The people around you in the body of Christ are a gift, and treating them as such is one of the most powerful ways to strengthen the church.
Underneath all of these principles is one central truth: a strong church is filled with people who genuinely love Jesus Christ and who live in response to His grace. That love is not based on feelings. It is a choice, a daily decision to lay your life down for God and for others. When love is the motive behind everything, it produces strong believers. And strong believers, living in the grace of Christ, produce a strong church.
