What does it take to slip beneath Arctic water and come face to face with an orca?
Joan Pina joins ZAK on the Canadian Podcast to share how he trained in Alberta’s Lake Minnewanka before freediving alongside orcas and humpback whales in Northern Norway.
Joan is a freediver, underwater photographer, and wildlife storyteller. He talks about preparing his body and mind for cold, open water, photographing marine life on its own terms, and the moment his lifelong goal finally became real.
The conversation also covers:
Training and freediving in Lake Minnewanka
Swimming with orcas and humpback whales in Norway
The family bonds within orca pods
What Blackfish changed about public views of captivity
Underwater and wildlife photography
His plans to photograph Vancouver Island’s kelp forests
Why protecting marine habitats starts with helping people see them
Orcas have fascinated ZAK since he was four years old, making this one of the most personal Canadian Podcast conversations yet.
