5 - Finding Your Style

Finding your unique style is one of the most important and fun parts about the art of photography and videography. It is kind of ironic that a big way you can find your own style is by getting inspiration from other people.

When finding your style it is important to focus on certain types or aspects of photography and videography and get really good at those things. You can dabble in several things but if you want to get good and find your niche market you need to focus on only a handful of areas, ie, weddings, families, nature, portraits, cars, events, newborn, and so many more.

If you want your Instagram and photos in general to have a certain look it will depend highly on where you are shooting your content. Some photographers lean into the light and airy look and they shoot at lighter-colored locations such as places that look colonial and have marble or beaches with bright sand with an emphasis on diffused light. Others who want a moodier look will shoot in places like the woods, industrial areas, and places that have harsh sunlight where they can get deep shadows.

You also have to think about what vibe you want for your photos. Are they posed with perfectly metered lighting or are they more documentary-style photographers, showing people's lives? A luxury photographer will take their pictures differently than a budget photographer, not necessarily because of skill but because of what each client wants. You have to know what your clients are looking for and then showcase that work.

Not only does location and posing affect your style but also what cameras and lenses you use. Using a wide lens will show much more of the immediate surroundings and give the image more movement whereas a tighter shot will be creamier and your subject will be much more of the focus of the shot.

Your style is not only about what your images and videos look like but how you interact with your clients. Kerrie has a more bubbly personality and Katelyn has a slightly more reserved attitude which both lean into who they are. Your clients will often hire you based off of your personality so don't be afraid to showcase it on your social media and website.

Editing your images makes a huge impact on the look of your work and helps draw in your specific clients. Editing your images can affect your work just as much as your location, posing, lenses, etc. Once you find the style you want to go for it is a good idea to find or make a preset you can add to each image to make editing faster and more consistent. Both Katelyn and Kerrie's editing style has changed over the years and that is OKAY. Just as you change and grow in life so will your photography.

Follow us:

Can't Shutter Up Instagram

@cantshutterup_podcast

Katelyn's Insta

@katelynbaronephotography

Kerrie's Insta

@kerriebaronemedia

Our friend and someone we get inspiration from:

Cassidy Lynne

@cassidylynne

Tools we use for inspiration in posing

Unscripted app

Pinterest

What we use to edit our photos & videos:

Lightroom and Premiere

Tools for posting:

Meta business suite

4 - Imposter Syndrome

In Ep. 4 of our podcast we talk about imposter syndrome. Let’s be real, we all deal with it. Before someone gets to the imposter syndrome part of their career they go through a rose colored glasses phase where they have false confidence in themselves. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it keeps them going and gets them to a point where they become what they thought they were. If we knew how bad we were at things when we started we would probably quit before we can see improvements.Tune in to find out what causes it and how we deal with it!Follow us on Istagram:@Cantshutteruppodcast@kerriebaronemedia@katelynbaronephotographySources:Wikepediahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impostor_syndrome#cite_note-Langford19932-11. Studies of college students (Harvey, 1981; Bussotti, 1990; Langford, 1990), college professors (Topping, 1983), and successful professionals (Dingman, 1987) have all failed, however, to reveal any sex differences in impostor feelings, suggesting that males in these populations are just as likely as females to have low expectations of success and to make attributions to non-ability related factors. 2.
