"Promising Young Woman" | Carleton Film Society Movie Discussion
<p>Three of our executive members - Stéphanie Hubert (@stephhubert), Keya Shirali (@keyashirali), and Ashley Bibby (@ashleybibbyy) - met virtually to broadcast a Facebook Live to discuss Emerald Fennell's feature film directorial debut, "Promising Young Woman". This film is about "A young woman, traumatized by a tragic event in her past, seeks out vengeance against those who crossed her path." (IMDB) *Trigger Warning* Viewer discretion is advised because this live discussion contains distressing but serious topics of sexual assault and violence.</p> <p> How do casting choices affect characterization in "Promising Young Woman"? How does this story explicate the "nice guy" phenomenon implicit in our social relationships, and how does that play out in sexual assault? Do the instances in this film, whether literally or figuratively, coincide with some of the dire realities of our own world? Why name the film "Promising Young Woman", and why is that so fitting? Can the male gaze be reverted? There are so many crucial questions to probe at with this film's material, and we delved into them as much as we could within half an hour. "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" | Carleton Film Society Movie Discussion
<p>"Ma Rainey's Black Bottom": A CFS Virtual Roundtable, where we discuss is Chadwick Boseman should win the Oscar for best performing actor, and our overall review and impression of the film. Four of our team members - Ashley Bibby (@ashleybibbyy), Beatrice Villadelgado (@bea.villadelgado), Keya Shirali (@keyashirali), and Stéphanie Hubert (@stephhubert) - connected virtually to broadcast a live roundtable about the film "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom".</p> <p> In what we felt was one of our most stimulating conversations yet, we shared some of our most differing and coinciding opinions on a multitude of filmic elements - from the representation of sexuality and the symbolism transcribed through costume design to issues regarding race in the music industry (and entertainment at large) as well as the late Chadwick Boseman's rousing performance. "Tenet" (2020, Dir. Christopher Nolan) - CFS Movie Discussion & Review
<p>Three Carleton Film Society (CFS) members - Stéphanie Hubert, Keya Shirali, and Beatrice Villadelgado - sat down (virtually) to discuss Christopher Nolan's latest film Tenet (2020). In this movie discussion, our members speculated on the impact of the film on the award circuit and why it was not as highly acclaimed as expected. They also discuss theories of what the ending of "Tenet" might have meant, and what was the message of the overall film. </p> <p> Tenet's logline: "Armed with only one word, Tenet, and fighting for the survival of the entire world, a Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time." (IMDB) As much as this logline is supposed to describe the film, there is so much more to review and discuss from this action-packed complex film. The Carleton Film Society delves into some of that in this movie discussion. Tenet was directed by Christopher Nolan (as they go into in discussing the Nolan effect) and stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Elizabeth Debicki.</p> <p> This was the second movie discussion that we had, and we have decided to continue this series bi-weekly, which will stream live on our Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/carletonfilmsociety).
