In this CAS lecture series, scholars from the field of philosophy will be joined by those from such varying disciplines as psychology, economics and law to address questions of moral philosophy. Since the time of Aristotle, questions of character and morals have been among the fundamental principles of ethics. The field of psychology, especially developmental psychology, concerns itself with the emotional, moral and social development of children and investigates the appearance of altruism, empathy and prosocial behavior. In the field of economics, the motivation behind decisions has also traditionally played an important role, with the analysis of this motivation allowing for a better understanding of the human image behind economic models. For the field of law, questions of moral philosophy are significant as the basis for the binding force and validity of legislation.

Empathy and First Personal Imagining
Adam Smith has claimed that imagination is necessary for empathy, in the sense that we identify with the person we are empathising with. But such imagination could take other forms, like simulating the other person's feelings. In her talk, Rae Langton explains (1) how empathy involves first personal imagining, and (2) what empathy might teach us about the first personal. She argues that empathic imagining is a de se attitude that involves an imaginative self-ascription of the other person's properties. | Rae Langton is professor for philosophy at the University of Cambridge.

Hyperbolic Discounting: Theory and Evidence of Imperfect Willpower
| David Laibson ist Robert I. Goldman Professor of Economics an der Harvard University.
