Moving beyond the crisis perspective, this project pays special attention to those dimensions of European integration that are often overlooked. It examines forms of continuity, stability, and renewal and draws on examples from history and our own times. Such dynamics are often hidden and beyond the focus of public debates. While the EU has been put under a lot of pressure, order contestation has often resulted in reformatting, reshaping, and reinforcing existing arrangements, not in institutional demise or discontinuation.

Unbestreitbar ist Europa immer auch ein durch Narrative und Erzählungen geprägtes Konstrukt; andererseits sind diese Narrative unabdingbar, um den anti-europäischen Fliehkräften etwas entgegenzusetzen. | Astrid Erll ist Professorin für Neue Englischsprachige Literaturen und Kulturen an der Universität Frankfurt a.M. Ein Schwerpunkt ihrer Arbeit liegt auf der Erforschung von Erinnerungskulturen. 2011 hat sie die „Frankfurt Memory Studies Platform“ gegründet. | Der Schriftsteller Robert Menasse hat sich in seinen Romanen Die Hauptstadt und Die Erweiterung mit Geschichte und Zukunft der Europäischen Union auseinandergesetzt. Er zählt zu den Autoren, die vehement pro-europäische Positionen beziehen. | Die Schriftstellerin Katja Petrowskaja wurde 2013 mit dem Ingeborg-Bachmann-Preis ausgezeichnet.
