The Price of Liberty: The Founding Fathers' Untold Struggles

We were taught the Founding Fathers were flawless marble statues. They weren't. They were broke, grieving, sick, and terrified — and they built a country anyway.

In this episode of Centered Live, Randy Burgoyne and historian Paul Maloy strip away the myth of the "finished product" Founders and dig into the real, messy history behind America's 250th birthday. You'll hear how George Washington watched Mount Vernon collapse into ruin while he was away fighting a war he wasn't sure he could win. How Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence while grieving the deaths of his wife and four children. How Benjamin Franklin lost his own son to the Revolution — permanently. And how Alexander Hamilton clawed his way up from orphaned poverty through sheer relentless work and chronic illness.

Then it gets darker: the signers of the Declaration weren't signing a ceremonial document — they were signing what was effectively their own death warrants for treason. Paul walks through what actually happened to men like Richard Stockton, Francis Lewis, and John Hart — men who lost their homes, their health, their families, and in some cases their lives for the cause.

And even after the war was won, the fighting didn't stop. John Adams battled deep anxiety and isolation. The Founders turned on each other, calling one another tyrants and traitors, all while trying to hold a fragile new republic together.

This isn't a history lesson about perfect men. It's a conversation about why their flaws are exactly what make them worth remembering — and why real heroism has never required perfection.

🇺🇸 Happy 250th, America. Here's to the beautifully imperfect people who built it.

Hosts: Randy Burgoyne & Paul Maloy

#CenteredLive #FoundingFathers #AmericanHistory #America250 #DeclarationOfIndependence

The Lost Art of Family Dinner

Something quietly disappeared from American life. Nobody cancelled it. Life just got busy — and the dinner table went empty.

Research is unambiguous: kids who eat regularly with their family are measurably less likely to struggle with depression, substance abuse, and academic failure. The dinner table isn't about the food. It's the daily signal that says you belong here, and these people see you.

Randy and Paul trace how family dinner was built, how it eroded, what we lose when the table goes dark — and what it actually takes to get it back.

Put the phones away. Sit down. See what happens.

45 minutes | Centered.Live | Season 2, Episode 7

Bridge Building in the Digital Age - Centered.Live Season 2 Episode 2

Bridge Building in the Digital Age

The world feels more divided than ever. Turn on the news and you see conflict, outrage, and people talking past one another. Have we forgotten how to communicate? How to negotiate? How to seek understanding instead of victory? In Season 2, Episode 2 of Centered.Live, historian Paul Maloy and technologist Randy Burgoyne explore what history and modern technology reveal about polarization—and what practical skills can help us rebuild connection in the digital age.Grounded in insights from Dr. Joe Thompson’s book Connecting: Life Skills for a Polarized World, this episode examines why polarization isn’t new—but why today’s digital silos make it more intense, more global, and harder to escape.Book by Joe ThompsonConnecting: Life Skills for a Polarized Worldhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/1977243908?...
