Mental Health, Women Leaders, and a 40-Year Legacy: A Conversation with Eleanor Huang

In this bonus episode of Centering: the Asian American Christian Podcast, Daniel Lee continues the micro-series on the AAC’s 10th anniversary with guest co-host Jessica ChenFeng (director of the Asian American Well-being Collaboratory, and Associate Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy at Fuller Seminary). They sit down with Eleanor Huang, retired licensed clinical social worker and co-founder of the Asian American Christian Counseling Service (AACCS), and recipient of our Community Catalyst Award at our 10th anniversary gala for her work in mental health. For over four decades, AACCS worked to destigmatize mental health counseling and psychotherapy in the Asian American Christian community. Eleanor guided it from a 1979 gathering in her Silver Lake living room through its incorporation in 1986, its 2016 acquisition by New Dawn Christian Family Services, and its closure in 2020. Jessica, who served on the AACCS board as a doctoral student, invited Eleanor to share the story behind the work, and the woman behind it. In this conversation, Eleanor discusses: How a small group of Christian mental health practitioners at Evergreen Baptist Church discovered one another and became the Paramythians, a name rooted in the biblical Greek word for comfort Why Asian American Christian mental health did not begin with millennials, and what it looked like for clinicians in the 1970s to be told to leave faith out of the therapy room Her path from UCLA in the late 1960s and '70s, through the Asian American Studies Center and affirmative action in social work education, to her own MSW The personal wound of being asked to leave a campus fellowship, and how it shaped her conviction that wounded Christians needed a place of care How AACC's four-part mission unfolded: direct counseling at accessible fees, church education, pastoral consultation, and building the pipeline of future Asian American clinicians The reality behind the organization: part-time therapists, volunteer leadership, and a community that kept asking whether God wanted it to continue What it meant to grow from working quietly in the background to leading visibly as a woman, including late-night grant writing in the era of typewriters and thermal fax machines Eleanor's story is a reminder for any young therapist or pastor who feels alone in this work: others have walked this road before, and their legacy is here for us to learn from.
