Don't Settle For Leftovers
God’s goal isn’t just to change your circumstances; it’s to change your source. The sermon contrasts living like a “cistern” versus living from the “fountain of living water.” A cistern can only hold what it collected in a previous season, can run dry, can leak, and can’t replenish itself. Spiritually, this looks like trying to survive today on yesterday’s prayer, last Sunday’s service, an old revival, past victories, or even our own strength and self-reliance. That mindset keeps people anxious—always wondering if they have “enough stored up” to make it through.
God calls His people back to Himself as the consistent, never-ending source. Drawing from Jeremiah 2:13, the message is that Israel’s tragedy wasn’t simply choosing a different container; it was trading a fountain for broken cisterns—exchanging relationship with God for religion, dependence on God for dependence on self, and continual supply for limited storage. The key invitation is to “abide” (remain, dwell, stay connected) in Christ, as in John 15:5: Jesus is the vine, we are the branches, and fruit comes from connection—not from trying harder.
“Leftovers” represent what was once fresh but is now stale: reheated worship, recycled faith, and a spiritual life fueled by memories instead of daily relationship. God provides “daily bread,” fresh mercy, and present help—not a life of scraping by on old provision. The sermon encourages listeners to stop letting circumstances determine their condition and instead let their connection to the unchanging “I AM” steady them through every season (even when troubled, perplexed, or persecuted).
Practically, staying connected looks like ongoing prayer, worship, repentance (restoring what sin and disobedience disconnect), and living in God’s Word. The Holy Spirit is presented not as a one-time emotional moment, but as continuing power meant to overflow through believers to bless and impact others—because received-but-never-released water becomes stagnant. The closing call is to come back to the fountain: God has fresh, abundant life available now for anyone willing to reconnect and abide.
