Making Yoga Make Sense

Why did I create Chakrology?

It wasn't because I wanted to reinvent yoga. It was because, after more than twenty years of teaching, I found myself asking the same question over and over again:

"How can one answer possibly fit every human being?"

In this final episode of Season One, I reflect on the assumptions I had to unlearn - about myself, about yoga, and about what it really means to teach people rather than postures.

It's also the story behind the phrase "Making Yoga Make Sense," and the perfect bridge into Season Two, where we'll begin exploring the mythology that shaped so much yoga in the first place.

Mosquitos, Murderers and Loincloths

Mosquitos. Murderers. Loincloths.

Just another day in yogaland.

In this episode I explore the gap between yoga and the culture that has grown up around it.

From freezing workshops with a lovely man from Manchester practicing in a loincloth, to being taught how to use the toilet properly, I've spent over twenty years wondering whether I really did fit into yoga. Or maybe I just didn't fit into yoga culture.

Along the way we'll visit Arjuna on the battlefield, ahimsa, vegetarianism and the 1960's counterculture movement.

Most importantly, we'll ask the bigger question:

Have we accidentally created a version of yoga that puts people off?

Because if yoga was never meant to help us escape life, but to help us live it, then perhaps its time to ask who we're really speaking to when we talk about yoga today.

As always, no incense was harmed in the making of this podcast.

What is Regular Yoga? Krishna, Goat Yoga & The Five Languages of Yoga

The Five Languages of Yoga

What do the Bhagavad Gita, football chants, Goat Yoga, and poor Arjuna have in common?

More than you might think.

After seeing a question in a yoga group asking, "what if I just want to do regular yoga?", I started wondering whether we're asking the wrong question altogether.

Maybe there isn't a regular yoga.

Maybe there are simply different yoga languages.

In this episode I explore the traditional paths of yoga through a modern lens, looking at why some people connect through movement, some through study, some through service, some through community, and some through reflection.

We'll also talk about modern yoga styles, clarity, confusion, nervous systems, and why Krishna might have spent eighteen chapters trying to answer a question that beginners are till asking today.

Poor Arjuna!
