When Pride Pushes People Out | Episode 45

Strong leadership doesn’t mean being the smartest person in every room. In fact, believing you always have the answer can be one of the fastest ways to lose the people around you. In this episode of Champion of the Underdog, John Graci explores how pride can quietly transform experienced leaders into people who stop listening, learning, and respecting the perspectives of others. Eventually, employees stop sharing ideas, problems go unspoken, innovation slows, and talented people start looking for the exit. The antidote is humility. Humble leaders can admit when they’re wrong, ask what they’re missing, and genuinely listen to their teams. They recognize that experience is valuable without assuming it makes them infallible. For HR and senior leadership, John makes the business case clear: engagement programs and retention bonuses can only do so much when employees are working under leaders who refuse to listen. Key Takeaways Success can become dangerous when leaders stop learning. Pride causes employees to stop speaking up and sharing ideas. Humility isn’t weakness; it’s recognizing you don’t always have the best answer. Leaders should intentionally put themselves in situations where they can learn and grow. Listening creates greater trust, courage, and loyalty throughout a team. Retention problems can sometimes be leadership problems in disguise. John’s challenge for leaders this week is simple: Ask your team, “What’s one thing you wish I did differently as a leader?” Then listen without defending or explaining. Remember: If you’re not coaching it, you’re allowing it. Who’s Really in Charge? A Kitchen-Table Look at Leadership | Episode 44

You don’t need a management title to find yourself leading someone. In this episode of Champion of the Underdog, John Graci looks at a common workplace problem: one employee asks another to handle responsibilities while they’re away, but nothing gets done. What looks like laziness or a bad attitude may actually be a problem with unclear authority, priorities, workload, or fear of making the wrong decision. Instead of acting like a temporary manager, John explains how employees can approach these situations as partners. Discuss what needs to happen, confirm what’s realistic, establish priorities, check understanding, and involve the actual manager when authority or accountability needs to be clear. For HR and senior leaders, there’s a bigger lesson: leadership happens far beyond official leadership titles. Employees informally lead every day when they cover shifts, train coworkers, manage projects, or step in while someone is away. Those employees need the tools and support to succeed, too. Key Takeaways Leadership can happen without a management title. Don’t confuse giving instructions with having authority. Check workload, priorities, and understanding before handing off responsibilities. Give coworkers a safe way to raise concerns or say when something isn’t realistic. Bring the actual manager into the conversation when authority needs clarification. Leadership training shouldn’t be limited to people with leadership titles. If you only train official managers, you may be missing where some of your organization’s most important everyday leadership actually happens. Remember: If you’re not coaching it, you’re allowing it. The Chain of Command or Chain of Drama | Episode 43

When an employee has a problem with their boss, where should they go first? In most everyday situations, the answer is simple: their boss. In this episode of Champion of the Underdog, John Graci tackles what happens when employees bypass their immediate leader and take routine complaints straight to the next level. Like a kid asking one parent after getting an answer they didn’t like from the other, going around the chain of command can create confusion, undermine leadership, and turn ordinary workplace issues into unnecessary drama. There are important exceptions. Serious concerns involving harassment, unsafe working conditions, or illegal or unethical behavior should be escalated appropriately. But routine disagreements over schedules, assignments, communication, and other day-to-day issues should generally start with a direct conversation. For HR and senior leaders, John also offers a warning: constantly entertaining end runs around frontline leaders can unintentionally teach employees to bypass accountability instead of working through problems professionally. Key Takeaways Address everyday workplace concerns with your immediate leader first. Don’t bypass a leader simply because you don’t like their answer. Serious safety, harassment, illegal, or unethical concerns should be escalated appropriately. If an issue remains unresolved, communicate your intention to involve the next level. HR and senior leadership should support healthy chains of communication instead of encouraging unnecessary bypasses. Strong organizations handle problems at the appropriate level and escalate when the situation is serious or remains unresolved. Remember: If you’re not coaching it, you’re allowing it.
