Mexico vs. South Africa: 2026 World Cup Inauguration
The 2026 FIFA World Cup began with a grand spectacle at the historic Estadio Azteca, officially referred to as the Estadio Ciudad de México for the duration of this monumental tournament. As the first nation to host three separate World Cups, Mexico welcomed the world to the largest edition of the competition to date, featuring 48 teams and a total of 104 matches. The festivities commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony that celebrated Mexican and Latin American identity. Under the creative direction of Marco Balich, the show featured a visual theme inspired by traditional "papel picado"and a central message of unity between the three host nations: Mexico, Canada, and the United States. High-profile musical performances energized the crowd, including Maná, who performed "Oye mi amor," and Los Ángeles Azules, who were joined by Belinda. The stadium reached a fever pitch when Shakira and Burna Boy performed the official tournament song, "Dai Dai," while tenor Andrea Bocelli delivered a stirring rendition of the official anthem, "DNA". Alejandro Fernández had the honor of performing the Mexican national anthem as the atmosphere inside the venue, filled with over 80,000 spectators, reached its peak. The inaugural match saw Mexico face off against South Africa in a highly anticipated rematch of the 2010 opening game. Mexico’s starting lineup, managed by Javier Aguirre, featured a blend of experience and new talent, including Brian Gutiérrez, a dual-national who recently committed to the Mexican team over the United States.Mexico took control early in the match. In the 9th minute, Julián Quiñones capitalized on a defensive error by South Africa, intercepting a clearance at the edge of the area and firing a shot into the net to score the first goal of the tournament. This early advantage allowed the home side to dictate the pace for much of the first half, though they missed opportunities to extend the lead, including a shot by Quiñones that struck the post. The second half brought more intensity and physical play. Just four minutes after the restart, South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole was sent off for a foul on Brian Gutiérrez, leaving the visiting team with ten men. Despite the disadvantage, South Africa attempted to find an equalizer as rain began to fall over the capital city.Mexico secured the victory in the 67th minute through a poignant moment for veteran striker Raúl Jiménez. Assisted by Roberto Alvarado, Jiménez found the back of the net to make it 2-0, an emotional goal he celebrated with tears and dedicated to his father. The match grew increasingly heated in the closing stages; South Africa’s Themba Zwane received a red card in the 83rd minute, and Mexico’s César Montes was also expelled in stoppage time. With this 2-0 result, Mexico finally broke a long-standing "curse," winning a World Cup opening match for the first time in their history after seven previous attempts resulted in five losses and two draws. This victory places them in a strong position within Group A as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures against South Korea and the Czech Republic.
