#73 AI Is Changing the Enrollment Game… Here's What Your School Can Do About It

AI is rapidly reshaping how families find, research, and choose schools — and most charter school enrollment strategies haven't caught up yet. In this episode of The Charter School Insider Podcast, host Daniel Casselli, President at BuyQ, sits down in person with Vanessa Barry, Founder of Mariposa Consulting Group, recorded live at the National Charter Schools Conference in New Orleans. Vanessa returns to the podcast eighteen months after her first appearance to unpack the biggest shift in the enrollment landscape since then: the rise of AI-powered school search. From parents asking chatbots to compare schools, to AI-generated answers pushing traditional search results down the page, the rules of enrollment marketing are changing. Vanessa explains why schools need to think beyond SEO and start optimizing for AEO — making sure AI agents can find complete, current, accurate answers about their schools. The conversation is packed with practical guidance for charter school operations leaders: a copy-paste AI prompt to audit your prospective parent experience, how to use AI to diagnose enrollment funnel melt, which AI shortcuts to avoid, and why — even in an AI-first world — the human side of enrollment matters more than ever. WHY THIS MATTERS FOR CHARTER SCHOOL LEADERS For most charter schools, enrollment is revenue — and the way families begin that journey is changing underneath the strategies schools built over the last decade. If AI agents can't find complete, current answers about your school, you may not appear in a family's consideration set at all, no matter how strong your programs are. That makes AEO an operational priority, not just a marketing tactic. This shift lands hardest on the leaders this podcast serves: COOs and operations teams who own enrollment alongside food service, technology, and facilities, often without a marketer on staff. Vanessa's guidance is built for that reality — low-cost audits any leader can run in an afternoon, conversion benchmarks that turn funnel data into decisions, and clear guardrails on where AI adds efficiency versus where it damages trust. For network leaders managing multiple campuses, the same principles offer a repeatable way to standardize digital presence and enrollment practices across schools while protecting the personal, relationship-driven experience that ultimately wins families. # 72 How Insurance Captives Actually Work — ft. Gary Clark of HUB Charter & Kylie Hunter of Berkley

Charter school health insurance costs are accelerating at historic rates, with medical trend inflation running at 15–16% in 2026 compared to a typical 8%, driven by a lag in post-COVID inflation working through provider contracts and a consistent 15% annual rise in million-dollar claimants. In this episode, Gary Clark of HUB International and Kylie Hunter of Berkley Accident and Health explain how self-funded health plans and group captive structures give charter schools the transparency, flexibility, and risk management tools to break out of the fully insured renewal cycle. The HUB Charter Captive, built exclusively for charter schools and leveraging their favorable demographics, has delivered average renewal increases of just 8.2% compared to 17% in the traditional stop loss market — with an estimated $7.83 million in total savings across its member schools since 2019. This episode is essential listening for any charter school CFO, COO, or executive director responsible for managing employee benefits strategy. WHY THIS MATTERS FOR CHARTER SCHOOL LEADERS Health insurance is consistently a top three budget line item for charter schools, and it is growing faster than per-pupil revenue, state funding, and most other revenue streams schools have access to. For years, many schools have treated benefits renewal as an unavoidable administrative event — something that happens to them — rather than a strategic financial decision they can actively manage. The data Gary and Kylie present makes the cost of inaction concrete. At 15–16% trend inflation compounding annually, a school's health insurance spend can double in under five years. Meanwhile, the HUB Charter Captive's member schools are averaging renewal increases of 8.2% and have collectively saved an estimated $7.83 million since 2019 by participating in a structure designed specifically for their risk profile. The strategic implication is clear: charter school finance and operations leaders who engage proactively — understanding their claims data, evaluating self-funded structures, and building a long-term benefits strategy — are creating meaningful financial runway for their schools. Those who wait until the renewal notice arrives are leaving that runway on the table. Interested in becoming a guest? # 71 The Myth of Incremental Progress Ft. Maryann Li, CEO, Ascend Public Charter Schools

Ascend Public Charter Schools achieved more than 20% academic growth in a single year across 17 Brooklyn K–12 campuses — and CEO Maryann Li credits three interconnected pillars: shifting organizational mindsets about what students can achieve, investing strategically in talent at every level, and building execution systems that enable rapid, data-driven intervention. Maryann challenges the assumption that incremental improvement is either realistic or responsible, arguing that a few bold decisions executed relentlessly — not a hundred disconnected tweaks — are what drive transformational outcomes. This episode is especially relevant for charter school CEOs, COOs, network leaders, and operations teams ready to move from incremental progress to step-change performance. WHY THIS MATTERS FOR CHARTER SCHOOL LEADERS Enrollment drives financial sustainability. Talent determines instructional quality. But the belief systems inside an organization determine both — because they set the ceiling on what leaders are willing to ask for and what staff believe is possible. Maryann Li's work at Ascend demonstrates that culture, talent strategy, and operational execution are not separate workstreams. They are interconnected levers that, when pulled together, produce outsized results. For charter school CEOs, the mindset framework offers a concrete way to diagnose where an organization has normalized low expectations — and what it takes to dismantle that. For COOs and operations leaders, the data systems discussion is directly applicable: building infrastructure that delivers leading indicators rather than lagging results is an operational discipline, not just an academic one. And for finance leaders, Maryann's framing of schools as human-powered organizations reframes talent investment as a core financial strategy — not an overhead cost. Interested in becoming a guest?
