Why the Ekambareswarar Shiva Lingam Has Never Been Bathed in Water or Oil
Parvati's EmbraceIn the ancient temple of Ekambareswarar in Kanchipuram, lies a Shiva Lingam unlike any other in India.
Made entirely of sand, this sacred lingam has never once been bathed in water or oil, the usual abhishekam rituals performed in every other Shiva temple.
Why?
Because of a story that goes back to Goddess Parvati herself.
This episode tells the story of Shiva's test of Parvati's devotion, and how Parvati embraced the sand lingam she had built under the ancient mango tree, refusing to let it dissolve. Even today, devotees say the lingam still bears the marks of her embrace.
We also look at the architecture of the Ekambareswarar Temple, one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams representing the element of Earth (Prithvi), and why this temple holds such a unique place in Shaiva tradition.🔔
