<p>"If we could have people recognize that [feelings are at the root of all that we do], and then learn how to navigate those feelings, process those feelings, accept those feelings, and validate those feelings, we would see an enormous shift in our society." — Dr. Steven Karaiskos in our chat about grieving and healing after a loss from suicide.</p><p>Dr. Karaiskos is the founder and CEO of Elpis Consulting, an organization that provides 1-on-1 grief mentoring, online grief peer support groups, and workshops. Dr. Karaiskos hosts professional development sessions on grief literacy, empathetic listening, suicide prevention, and the power of postvention. Dr. Karaiskos also helps run an overnight camp for children who are survivors of a loved one's suicide through The Kita Center.</p><p>In our chat, Dr. Karaiskos and I discuss how suicide postvention is prevention, how we can improve our language surrounding suicide, and the importance of empathetic listening and storytelling and "storcatching," to name a few topics. Dr. Bass' career has spanned various sectors, including research, teaching, policy, and mentorship. Notably, he served on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change committee, which was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, created the innovative software COBWEB and its accompanying lab at the University of Toronto, and conducted research essential to implementing a groundbreaking green roof bylaw in the City of Toronto. Dr. Bass shared some super interesting insights in this conversation and was such a delight to talk to!</p>
