[…] Reading is just such an internal process that I never realized how slow I was. And I loved it. I love studying Chinese literature. So even though I was quite slow, it didn't really stop me from getting into a program. But by the time that I was hitting the point where I was working on my dissertation and I really needed to just be reading literal tons of books, it became a problem. Actually, part of the way that I found out that I was dyslexic was when I was studying Chinese. So I had studied Chinese first in the PRC, and while I was there, I struggled with some aspects of pinyin. Pinyin, for those of you all who don't know, is the romanization system used in the PRC There are some words in pinyin where it's very easy to reverse the letter order. […]
