From Muck to Hope: Historical Lessons in Faith
Exploring how small incidents can spark significant change.
Zechariah 4:10 — “For who hath despised the day of small things?”
Wayne kicks off this episode with an unexpected word: muck. It serves as a metaphor for the seemingly insignificant events that can lead to monumental outcomes. But before explaining his use of the word “Muck” (a synonym of “mud”), he takes us back in time to the era a generation before 1775.
Wayne takes us back to the tumultuous period just before the American Revolution, highlighting a curious incident known as the War of Jenkins’ Ear. The story revolves around Captain Robert Jenkins, who had his ear severed by the Spanish after being accused of smuggling. He preserved his pickled ear as evidence, which ultimately sparked outrage in Britain and led to war.
This historical anecdote underscores how a minor affront can escalate into significant conflict, reflecting the broader human experience of outrage and justice.
Wayne draws a parallel to the Old Testament, specifically the story of Samson. In Judges 14, Samson’s riddle ignites a series of retaliatory actions that lead to a full-blown conflict with the Philistines.
“Don’t despise the day of small things. Small things invariably lead to bigger things.”
— Dr Wayne C Sedlak
He emphasizes that, just like the events in history, seemingly trivial issues can spiral into larger consequences when driven by divine purpose as the text states of Samson’s riddle.
The narrative shifts to the era of King George’s War, where the New England faced an invasion from a formidable French fleet…. 73 ships, 800 cannons, 13,000 troops. As the threat loomed, the citizens of New England turned to prayer for deliverance.
Wayne recounts how Reverend Thomas Prince led prayer as the colonies of New England cried to God for help, beseeching God for intervention. Remarkably, a hurricane struck, scattering the French fleet and resulting in significant losses for the enemy. The fleet was dashed, much of it being destroyed.
“When he finished praying, the sky darkened, winds shrieked, church bells rang…” according to journal entries of the day.
— Dr Wayne C Sedlak
This dramatic turn of events serves as a powerful reminder of the potential impact of collective faith and prayer. The sudden rise of a deadly storm is something Dr. Sedlak has witnessed in this modern day…in answer to a prayer of deliverance. This series of events drove many to their knees in the colonies, arguably being of such importance as to constitute a readiness to hear the preaching of ministers like Edwards, Whitefield, Davies and Frelinghuysen as God began to move a people in the Great Awakening. That Awakening would become foundational to the rise of a free United States.
As we navigate our own challenges, Wayne’s insights encourage us to recognize that small actions and incidents can have profound implications. Whether in history or our personal lives, it’s essential to remain aware of the larger forces at play and the power of faith to shape outcomes.
Returning to the issue of “Muck” there is a vast tundra of Muck surrounding most of the land mass encircling the Arctic Ocean. The Muck – made of mud, crushed TROPICAL foliage, palm trees and other trees (shattered) all mixed together, were deep frozen as deeply as 4000 feet, extending for, perhaps 12,000 miles of deep freeze muck. Evolutionary scientists cannot explain this seemingly unimpressive fact. But that MUCK is one of many keys unlocking the proof of a universal Flood…and the human heart! It is one giant issue that spells the doom of evolution.
