Faith, Family & the Election: A Christian Conversation

The first weekly live conversation from the Christian Civic League of Maine, with Sen. Trey Stewart and Joel Furrow. We talk about how Christians can engage culture and current events with both compassion and conviction. That includes the Lindsay Clancy case, the value of children, recent Maine debates on life and parental rights, and a court decision involving a child’s church attendance. The goal is not to attack personalities. It is to think clearly about leadership, policy, and why the church’s presence in civic life matters. We also discuss close legislative races, practical ways churches can help people register and vote, and Pray for Maine Sunday on September 20. Pray for Maine: Redeeming a Flag, Uniting Churches, and Calling Believers to Prayer & Action

In this episode of the Christian Civic League of Maine podcast, Executive Director Nick Adolphsen sits down with Ramsey Tripp and Deputy Director Joel Furrow to unpack the origins and growth of the Pray for Maine movement. What began as Ramsey’s idea—sparked by the historic Appeal to Heaven flag and Maine’s 1901 pine-tree flag—has become a call for believers across the state to appeal to God for the spiritual health of Maine. The hosts explore the deep symbolism of the pine tree (strength, independence, and resistance to tyranny), the controversies surrounding the flag from both left and right, and their deliberate effort to “redeem” the symbol as a reminder to pray. They recount powerful prayer gatherings: 150–200 people worshiping and praying in the Hall of Flags during the Governor’s State of the State address, nearly 500 on the National Day of Prayer in the rain and mud, and more than 1,100 packing the Collins Center for the Arts on a sunny Sunday night with Eric Metaxas. Across denominations and traditions, churches are uniting around the simple conviction that Maine’s deepest needs require the hand of God. The conversation turns practical with the upcoming Pray for Maine Sunday on September 20—encouraging churches to set aside time for focused prayer and to help congregants register to vote or request absentee ballots. Drawing from 2 Timothy, the Lord’s Prayer, Nehemiah, and Jehoshaphat, the hosts emphasize that prayer and faithful action go together: believers are called both to appeal to Heaven and to walk into the valley as stewards of the opportunities God has given. Listen for the story behind the flag and merchandise (prayformaine.org), why the enemy is not flesh and blood, and a clear invitation for pastors and churches to join the movement. I’m excited to officially welcome Joel Furrow as Dep Director of the Christian Civic League of Maine

I’m excited to officially welcome Joel Furrow as Deputy Director of the Christian Civic League of Maine.Joel joins us after 14 years with The Root Cellar in Lewiston and Portland, including six years as Executive Director, where he worked alongside churches to serve communities, develop leaders, and bring the hope of the Gospel into some of Maine’s hardest places. While work under the dome in Augusta has been integral to the League’s mission for more than a century, we know that civic engagement doesn’t begin and end in Augusta. It happens wherever the Church encounters its neighbors: in our communities, schools, families, ministries, and public institutions.Joel will help us strengthen those connections, equip churches, and build pathways for Christians to faithfully engage in the civic arena wherever God has given them influence. We believe God is at work in Maine. And we’re grateful He has brought Joel to our team for this next chapter.Welcome, Joel! This is a public episode. Faith and Freedom 2026: Eric Metaxas on the Christian Roots of the American Revolution

In this message from Faith and Freedom 2026 in Maine, an opening reflection ties the Declaration of Independence and the 1776 Revolution to God’s Word, the image of God, unalienable rights from the Creator, the Appeal to Heaven flag, and early congressional calls for fasting and prayer. Bestselling author and speaker Eric Metaxas then shares stories from his book Revolution, highlighting the faith of the founders, figures like Benedict Arnold and George Whitefield, the Great Awakening’s influence, covenant theology, and the spiritual character of the Revolution. He calls believers to courage, prayer, cultural engagement, joy, and active obedience so that God may continue His work of renewal in Maine and across America as the nation approaches its 250th year. From Addiction to Ministry in the City: Pastor Terry Dinkins and The Mansion Church

In this episode of the Christian Civic League Podcast, Nick Adolfson sits down with Pastor Terry Dinkins of The Mansion Church in Bangor, Maine. Pastor Terry shares his powerful personal testimony — moving from years of alcohol and drug addiction to finding new life in Christ. He recounts how God called him into jail and prison ministry, eventually leading him to plant The Mansion Church, a ministry focused on reaching the formerly incarcerated, the homeless, and those struggling with addiction. He also speaks candidly about the challenges facing Bangor — including drug use, homelessness, and current policy approaches — and explains why he has decided to run for Bangor City Council. This is an encouraging conversation about the transforming power of the Gospel, the vital role of the local church, and the importance of Christians engaging in their communities with both truth and compassion. Faithful Presence in Power: Scott Centorino on Quiet Reform in the White House

In a world dominated by outrage, headlines, and political drama, it’s easy to become discouraged about government and public life. But meaningful change often happens quietly, faithfully, and behind the scenes. Recently, we sat down with Scott Centorino to discuss his work over the past year in the White House Office of Domestic Policy, tackling issues like gender policy, homelessness, and the challenge of advancing meaningful reform within a massive bureaucratic system. More than politics, this conversation is a reminder that God is still at work—even in imperfect systems and difficult moments. As believers, we are called not to despair, but to faithful presence, discernment, and prayer for those serving at every level of government. This is a public episode. Ministry in the Marketplace

Nick Adolphsen sits down with Katherine Young of Young’s Greenhouse in South Paris, Maine — a thriving, multi-generational family business with 14 greenhouses and four acres under cover. What started as a way for dairy farmers to supplement income has grown into one of Maine’s largest greenhouses, offering perennials, annuals, vegetables, succulents, hanging baskets, and more. But this episode goes far beyond plants. Katherine shares how their family seeks to honor Christ in every aspect of business — from playing Christian music and hosting gospel-centered community events with Mossbrook Church, to responding with humility to difficult customers, stewarding resources generously, and raising their children to work with integrity. Together they explore biblical principles of work from Genesis, the challenges and blessings of family business, the counter-cultural power of multi-generational faithfulness, and practical ways the church can pray for Christian business owners in the marketplace. Whether you own a business, work in retail, or simply want to live out your faith more fully where God has placed you, this conversation will encourage you to see everyday work as high and holy calling — tending the garden for God’s glory This is a public episode. Prayer Over Politics: Why Maine's True Battle Is Spiritual – And How You Can Join the Fight Starting Now

Hey friends and fellow Mainers, Nick Adolphsen here, Executive Director of the Christian Civic League of Maine. If you’ve been following our work, you know we’re convinced Maine’s deepest issues—cultural confusion, family breakdown, policies that sideline parents and faith, rising abortion numbers, and more—aren’t primarily political. They’re spiritual. No candidate or bill alone fixes what’s broken in hearts and homes. Only God can bring true renewal. That’s why we launched Pray for Maine (prayformaine.org)—a statewide movement calling believers to commit to prayer for our state, leaders, churches, families, and future. It’s inspired by our pine tree “Appeal to Heaven” heritage: when human efforts fail, we raise a banner and cry out to God. In our latest podcast episode of Faith Matters in Maine (or Anchored, depending on the series branding), I sat down with Dr. James Culbertson, President of New England Bible College (a 66-year-old Maine institution equipping faithful leaders). This conversation is urgent and timely—Jim joined despite recent surgery because these topics (prayer, the power of God’s Word, and the enemy’s tactic of twisting definitions) can’t wait. Key highlights from the episode: * Prayer as the starting point: Problems run deeper than politics. We need the church to pray persistently (2 Chronicles 7:14). Join us in committing daily—sign up at prayformaine.org for prompts and updates. Encourage your church to dedicate monthly time specifically for Maine. * Redefining terms is nothing new: From Genesis 3 (the serpent’s “Did God actually say...?”) to today’s Supreme Court debates on basic biology in women’s sports cases, culture twists God’s clear design (man/woman, love, compassion). Jim unpacks how academia and relativism fuel this, and why biblical education matters now more than ever. * The gospel is for NOW: Not just heaven—transformation happens today (2 Corinthians 5:17). Compassion isn’t a government check; it’s personal disciple-making—mentoring youth, inviting the hurting to our table, teaching responsibility and faith. We’ve outsourced too much; time to reclaim it. * Urgent invitation: Gather with us at the Maine State House in Augusta on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, 6:00–8:00 p.m. This aligns with Governor Mills’ State of the State address (7 p.m.), but we’re not protesting or watching politics. We’re uniting as believers to pray for spiritual awakening—no signs, no sound system needed (God hears every prayer!). Bring your church, family, friends. Details and RSVP at prayformaine.org or the Facebook event page. Listen now on here now or follow us on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or YouTube – or search “Faith Matters in Maine” with Nick Adolphsen and Dr. James Culbertson. (Runtime: ~[estimate 45-60 min based on transcript length].)This isn’t about pessimism—it’s hope. Scripture shows God relents when His people intercede (like Moses for Israel). The gospel changes lives, families, and communities right here, right now. Will you join the movement? * Commit to pray: Sign up at prayformaine.org. * Grab gear: Fly the Pray for Maine flag, wear the hat or shirt—available in the shop there. * Show up January 27: Let’s fill the State House with prayer. Share this episode and post widely. Stones of Remembrance: How One Teacher’s Quiet Stand Sparked a Miracle in Maine’s North Woods

In the remote woods of Danforth and Weston, Maine, longtime PE teacher and wilderness guide Tammi Matula faced an impossible choice: compromise her biblical convictions on God’s design of male and female—or walk away from the career and community she loved. When a radical transgender policy stripped away parental rights and forced teachers to affirm gender transition without consent, Tammi quietly resigned. But God wasn’t finished. Overnight, a team formed—fourth-generation local Elbridge Cleaves, Maine Christian Civic League, Maine Education Initiative, pastors, parents, and neighbors. What followed was a peaceful, powerful stand: 150+ community members filled the gym, the school board listened, and in a unanimous vote, they reversed the policy, aligned with Title IX, and reinstated Tammi. This is more than a policy win. It’s a pile of stones—a testimony to what happens when courage meets community, conviction meets prayer, and light refuses to retreat. “We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on You.” – 2 Chronicles 20:12 #StonesOfRemembrance #EastGrandVictory #FaithInMaine #ParentalRights #CourageOverCompromise This is a public episode.
