The Pastor who Sacrificed his Wife for a 20-Year Old Intern

I found myself in tears over the Caleb Flynn case. If you have not heard of this case, it involves a married father of two—a music pastor of an Assemblies of God Church in Dayton, Ohio—having an affair with a college intern worship leader 16 years his junior. Caleb purportedly was Alleigha’s first lover, and the affair lasted over a year. Presumably due to financial and social pressures, Caleb failed to meet his mistress’s ultimatum date to leave his wife, and the relationship dissolved. A few months later, however, Alleigha received a text message stating that he chose her instead of his wife. While Alleigha thought this meant Caleb was going to divorce his wife, what investigators—and now a jury—have found is that it meant his wife, by his own hands, would no longer live. Why the Tears? They did not come until I learned about Ashley Flynn. While photos can be deceiving, she seemed genuinely kind. But what brought my tears was learning that she was a regular teacher for LifeWise Academy—a group that buses public school kids off-campus to teach them the gospel. After watching a video of what these faithful Christians are doing to influence the next generation with the gospel, and contrasting that with what befell her, it was too much to bear. The Warnings of Scripture Proverbs 5:15–20 advises: “Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well... Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth... be intoxicated always in her love. Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an adulteress?” Within marriage, we have God’s green light to give ourselves fully over to our spouses in sexual intimacy—to “be intoxicated,” or put another way, “led astray.” I like to think God decreed this being led astray in holy matrimony as a protection against being led astray in forbidden beds. So to my married audience: intoxicate yourselves with your spouse. It is God’s good plan. Another Proverb is downright soul-chilling. Proverbs 7:16–23 warns of the seductive woman and the foolish man who follows her: “All at once he follows her, as an ox goes to the slaughter... as a bird rushes into a snare; he does not know that it will cost him his life.” Caleb threw his life, soul, and freedom away—but far worse, his wickedness cost an innocent victim, his wife Ashley, her very life. A wise friend once told me that where there is adultery, murder always seems to be also. And it was no different here. Walking the Path of Faithfulness So we know the dangers; what is the cure? * Be born again. Only the Holy Spirit gives us power to defeat the desires of the flesh. Caleb carried on deception for over a year and falsely claimed his wife had an affair. Alleigha texted that she was “hopeless, lifeless and without purpose” without him, wishing his wife were off planet earth. These are red flags that do not typically come from a regenerated heart. Our first step is to beseech the mercy of God to save our souls and fill us with the Holy Spirit. * Bring temptations into the light. Especially with our spouses. No matter how much it hurts them to hear, it is always better to deal with darkness in its infancy than face the fallout when darkness reaches maturity and brings forth death. * Stay close to Jesus. If you walk in the Spirit, you will not gratify the flesh. If you are filled and satisfied with Christ, you will not seek it elsewhere. Through His Word, prayer, and fellowship, we drink living water rather than hewing broken cisterns that hold no water. * Remember true worth. Beauty is fleeting and charm is deceitful, but a spouse who fears the Lord should be praised. Do not be led astray by looks or superficial knowledge of someone else. Through blood, sweat, tears, and suffering, you have grown with your spouse. A healthy marriage is where our spouse helps us fight temptation, comforts us in affliction, and helps ensure we one day hear: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” The Gospel and Our Prayers We are all vulnerable to sin: “Sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it” (Genesis 4:7). The good news of the gospel is that though we have sinned, we have a Savior who never did. He lived the life we failed to live, bore our judgment on the cross, and secured everlasting life through His resurrection. In Him, we are forgiven, righteous, and empowered by the Spirit. Please join me in praying: * For Ashley’s family and friends: That they would be comforted and process their grief in healthy ways. * For her two young daughters: Who have lost both parents, and for the wisdom and strength of their caregivers. * For Alleigha Botner: That she would come to a saving knowledge of Christ. * For Caleb Flynn: In his confinement, that he would consider the fruit of his ways and cast himself fully at the feet of Jesus, who is able to save to the uttermost. Is God the Author of Sin?

If God is sovereign over everything, and evil exists, did it come from him? Start with what we know for certain: God isn’t just holy — he is holiness. He doesn’t merely possess goodness as an attribute; he’s its source and definition. Since he’s uncreated and unchanging, he cannot sin. Creatures are a different story. Angels and humans, being created rather than the Creator, have mutable wills — which means we have the capacity to sin, even before we ever use it. Theologians call this posse peccare: able to sin. Could God have made creatures without that capacity? I believe he could have. I don’t think it’s biblical to say free will was somehow necessary — as if God were bound by some higher law requiring him to give creatures the ability to fall. A truly sovereign God answers to no one but himself. But that raises the harder question: if God could have made beings incapable of sin and didn’t, then he sovereignly ordained the circumstances in which sin arose. Theologians reach for concepts like providential concurrence, judicial abandonment, and divergence of intention to explain how God can ordain evil’s existence without being its author or being tainted by it. Those categories genuinely help. They don’t fully resolve the tension. At some point we reach the edge of what’s been revealed, and no further. What we can say is this: since God is goodness itself, and since nothing happens apart from his decree, he decreed that sin and evil would exist — most likely so he could display his kindness to the elect in redeeming them, and his justice in judging those he has not elected. That’s a hard place to land. Paul lands there too, in Romans 9: “who are you, O man, to talk back to God?” Four Kinds of Will Augustine mapped out four possible states of the human will, and they’re worth knowing by name: * Posse peccare — able to sin. Adam, before the fall, and the unfallen angels. * Non posse non peccare — not able not to sin. What Adam became after the fall, and what the rebel angels became after their rebellion — sin is now the only thing the will can choose. * Posse non peccare — able not to sin. What the redeemed are given now — real power to choose righteousness, though the capacity to fall remains. * Non posse peccare — unable to sin. The final state of the redeemed in glory, and the state the elect angels were given after the rebellion. Here’s the definition of “free will” that actually falls out of this: freedom isn’t the ability to choose against your own desires. It’s the freedom to choose according to what you desire. The unregenerate will always choose sin, not because they’re forced to, but because sin is what their will actually wants. The regenerate are given new desires — not new ability to defy their nature, but an actually changed nature, one that now wants righteousness. Both groups act freely. Only one is free from sin’s dominion. We don’t get to fully resolve this. Isaiah’s right: God’s ways are higher than ours. What we do know, with certainty, is this — we’ve sinned against a holy God and deserve his wrath. And in mercy, he sent his Son to live the life we couldn’t and bear the judgment we owed, so that we could be reconciled to him. I’d genuinely like to hear how you’re wrestling with this — drop your thoughts, or a suggestion for a future video, in the comments. Why Is Healthcare in America So Broken?

During World War II, Americans had more money than usual — wartime jobs paid well — but fewer goods to spend it on, since factories were making tanks, not toasters. Too much money chasing too few goods is a recipe for inflation, and the government saw it coming. So it froze prices, issued ration books, and capped wages. That last move created a problem for employers: if you can’t pay more to attract workers, how do you compete for talent? The answer was benefits — specifically, employer-sponsored health insurance. It was a loophole dressed as generosity: employees got coverage without paying income tax on it, and employers got to attract skilled workers without technically raising wages, while deducting the cost as a business expense and avoiding payroll tax on it altogether. What was meant to be a wartime workaround got permanently written into law with the Internal Revenue Code of 1954. From there, the dependency compounded: leaving your job meant losing your tax-advantaged insurance, so buying coverage on your own became far more expensive by comparison. Workers stayed tied to employers for healthcare. And because neither the employee nor the employer was directly paying the actual medical bill, nobody in the transaction had much reason to ask what anything cost. That’s the “third-party payer” problem — and once nobody’s watching the price tag, prices stop behaving like prices. Then it got bigger. Medicare and Medicaid arrived in 1965, pouring hundreds of billions of new dollars into the system over the following decades — a massive demand shock with no corresponding increase in supply, which is exactly the kind of thing that drives costs up. A decade later, the 1974 National Health Planning and Resources Development Act created Certificate of Need laws, letting existing hospitals legally block new competitors from opening in their region — protecting incumbents, not patients. Layer all of this on top of each other and you get a system where insurers often profit more as overall medical spending rises, where paperwork multiplies faster than actual care, and where hundreds of millions of dollars get spent lobbying to keep the arrangement exactly as it is. None of this happened because anyone sat down and designed a broken healthcare system on purpose. It happened because a 1940s wage-control workaround never got undone, and every subsequent policy built another floor on top of a foundation nobody meant to be permanent. What do you think would actually fix it? I’d like to hear your take in the comments — and let me know if you’d want a deeper dive into the theology of healthcare, or my own thoughts on a remedy. Further Reading: Why Is Healthcare in America So Broken? * Internal Revenue Code of 1954, Section 106 — the actual statute that permanently exempted employer-paid health premiums from taxation; worth knowing by name even if you don’t read the legal text itself. * NBER, “Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance and Health Reform” — a concise, well-sourced academic summary of how and why the ESI system developed the way it did. Free to read at nber.org. * 1974 National Health Planning and Resources Development Act — the origin of Certificate of Need laws; searching “CON laws by state” will show you whether your own state still has them, and how strict. * Congressional Budget Office reports on Medicare/Medicaid spending growth — for primary data on how program spending has scaled since 1965, rather than secondhand summaries. * David Goldhill, Catastrophic Care: How American Health Care Killed My Father — a longer, accessible book-length treatment of the third-party-payer problem from a business (not policy-wonk) perspective. If you only read one: the NBER summary — it’s short, rigorous, and covers the whole employer-insurance backstory in a few pages. My Testimony

My Testimony A short read on hope, atonement, and what to do with a world like this one What do we make of existence? Of a world, as the Oxford mathematician John Lennox puts it, full of both beauty and barbed wire? If there’s a God behind it, is he good? And what do we do with all the suffering in the meantime? I’m not asking those questions abstractly. There was a period in my life when despair had closed in on me so completely that I couldn’t function at work, couldn’t quiet my own mind, and genuinely feared I’d lose myself to it entirely — a fear sharpened by watching mental health struggles run through my own family. Scripture has old language for that kind of darkness: a sky that feels like bronze overhead, a heart in constant suspense, mornings you wish were evening and evenings you wish were morning. I lived inside that description for a while, not as poetry, but as my actual Tuesday. What pulled me out wasn’t a technique. It was three words I hadn’t really understood before, sitting with a book by Jerry Bridges on a cold day in December. Atonement, propitiation, expiation. They sound like seminary jargon, but they’re really just three angles on the same rescue. Propitiation is about God’s own justice — his righteous anger toward sin actually being satisfied, not waved away. Expiation is about the sin itself — not appeased, but removed, wiped clean, the way Micah says God casts our sins “into the depths of the sea.” And atonement is what happens when both of those are true at once: a broken relationship traded for peace, two sides who were at odds now genuinely at one. What struck me, reading it, was that this wasn’t a legal transaction happening somewhere far away. It was for me — not people in general, but me, specifically, by name. And something happened when that landed: a peace I hadn’t engineered, a sense of being washed clean that didn’t stay confined to my own heart — the whole world outside my window looked different afterward, like it had been rinsed. Paul has a name for this: if anyone is in Christ, he’s a new creation. The old has gone. Genuinely new has come. I bring this up not to perform a testimony, but because I think the question underneath it is the one you’re actually asking too: where do you put your hope in a world this mixed? Not in the things of this world — they weren’t built to hold that kind of weight. C.S. Lewis put it simply: if you find in yourself a desire nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that you were made for another world. Hope works the same way. If hope has to be solid to be worth anything, it can’t be built out of things that are, by nature, always shifting. That’s why Hebrews calls hope an anchor for the soul — not a feeling, an anchor, dropped somewhere hope can’t be undone by weather. It’s anchored in a specific place: behind the curtain, in the most sacred room that ever existed, where Jesus went ahead of us, carrying his own blood as the very sacrifice this whole thing required. A God who doesn’t shift. Who is, in his own words, the same yesterday, today, and forever. I don’t have every answer to suffering. I’m still working through plenty of it myself. I’m not writing this as someone who has it all figured out — just as one voice, among a lot of others, who was in real trouble with no way out on my own, until I wasn’t. So: where is your hope right now? And is it built to hold the weight you’re putting on it? If you want to talk more about any of this, my email’s linked below — I mean that. And if you want to go deeper on the ideas here, there’s a reading list linked as well. christianerudition123@gmail.com Further Reading: Beauty and Barbed Wire Short list — the sources actually referenced in the piece, plus one or two natural next steps. * Jerry Bridges, The Gospel for Real Life — the book at the center of the testimony itself; a clear, pastoral treatment of atonement, propitiation, and expiation for readers who want the fuller explanation. * C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, Book III, ch. 10 (”Hope”) — source of the “desires nothing in this world can satisfy” argument, worth reading in full context. * John Lennox, Where Is God in a Coronavirus World? — a short, accessible book working through the “beauty and barbed wire” framing at greater length than a single talk allows. * Deuteronomy 28:65–67 — the source of the “sky like bronze,” “if only it were evening” language quoted early in the piece; worth reading in its full, harder context. * Micah 7:18–19 — “he will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea” — a short passage, worth reading slowly rather than only as a quoted line. * Hebrews 6:19–20 — the “anchor for the soul” passage; short enough to read in two minutes, dense enough to sit with for a lot longer. * 2 Corinthians 5:17–21 — Paul’s “new creation” language, immediately followed by his own explanation of reconciliation — the theological heart of the whole piece in one paragraph. If you only read one: Hebrews 6:13–20, in full, slowly. It’s short, and it’s the actual anchor (literally) the whole essay is built on. The Digital Wilderness

I let my curiosity run wild for a few days and watched thirty-one videos spanning almost every corner of the internet — surveillance cameras that track your eyes while you drive, a Georgia utility clearing families off ancestral land for a data center, a president joking about a fourth term, a defense secretary dodging a straight answer, an AI pioneer admitting he isn’t sure his own creation won’t end badly, a debate over Islam and the West, a prison in Syria next to a mall in Qatar, a preacher telling a grieving mother to give money before her son could be delivered. By the end I felt what I think a lot of us quietly feel: a heavy, suffocating fatigue. Institutions look hollow. Technology looks weaponized. The individual person looks small. Here’s what I actually found, watching it all back to back: none of this is new. And every piece of it already has an answer, worked out long before any of us were born. We are being watched, and we are tired of it Cameras on every corner, cars that monitor your eyes, a company using eminent domain to bulldoze a family’s land for a server farm — the exhaustion isn’t really about any one policy. It’s the sense that resisting something this large is like sweeping back the ocean. And into that fatigue steps the political strongman, half-joking about staying in power longer than the law allows, while accountability on every side of the aisle quietly erodes. Augustine’s answer, echoed by teachers like R.C. Sproul, is that government exists because sin exists. There were no police in Eden. After the Fall, God posted a guard at the gate — force, for the first time, becomes necessary. Government is a “necessary evil,” not because it’s good in itself, but because a world without it is worse. But Christianity also does something no other system does: it strips the state of any claim to be ultimate. Jesus stood in front of the most powerful man in Judea and said, “My kingdom is not of this world.” Every empire that ever built a surveillance state has eventually crumbled. The Church has outlived every one of them. We built something we’re not sure we can control Watch a tunneling company cut construction costs by a hundredfold through pure ingenuity, then watch the same innovator, in a different interview, estimate real odds that AI could end badly for humanity — and admit the people racing to build it are too competitive to actually cooperate on safety. A senator warns that automation could erase a hundred million American jobs. Trust in both AI and in the market that was supposed to protect us keeps slipping, especially among the young. Scripture doesn’t panic and doesn’t celebrate blindly here either. Technology is a real tool of the Cultural Mandate in Genesis — but it was never going to be able to redeem a human heart, because that was never its job. Fallen people, left to themselves, have never been able to save themselves from what they build. Real security was never going to come from an algorithm or a currency. It comes from a God who has promised never to leave us, market or no market. Every civilization is built on something A widening lens: a debate over where Islamic political and legal tradition sits in real tension with values a secular democracy claims to protect. A Gulf nation built on staggering oil wealth, run in part on the labor of migrant workers with very little legal standing of their own. A dictatorship that tortured tens of thousands of its own people in a single prison. And then, gently, a documentary retracing how a handful of monks quietly planted something in a brutal pagan landscape that eventually grew into a culture of law and mercy. Historians who aren’t even writing as believers — Tom Holland in Dominion chief among them — have made the case that the values a secular West assumes are self-evident (equality, dignity, rights) are actually a direct inheritance from Christian conviction, not a neutral default. A culture that keeps that fruit while cutting itself off from the root becomes what’s sometimes called a “cut-flower culture.” It looks alive in the vase for a while. It just isn’t attached to anything that can keep feeding it. The deepest wounds come from inside the house Of everything I watched, nothing grieved me more than an “apostle” — building a real platform, saying many true things — telling a desperate, grieving mother that she needed to give money before her son could be delivered. Whatever you conclude about the more debatable questions around her ministry, that one isn’t complicated. Peter warned specifically about teachers who “exploit you with deceptive words.” Grace was paid for once, in full, two thousand years ago. Nobody gets to sell it twice. The existence of a counterfeit doesn’t prove the real thing is worthless. It proves the real thing is worth counterfeiting. What the world actually needs Three quiet clips said more than everything before them: a young man wrestling honestly with hard questions for twenty-six minutes and staying to the end anyway. A man responding to real verbal abuse with the same seven words, over and over — I respect you in humanity. I love you in humanity. And, mercifully, a golden retriever failing spectacularly to catch a treat. Christians disagree about the exact shape of how history ends. But every serious view agrees on the part that matters here: history has a King, and the ending has already been written. God is not pacing anxiously through heaven over an election or an algorithm. Governments fall. Markets swing. Christ does not change. So tonight, turn off the screen. If you’re tired of being watched, remember the God who sees everything isn’t a cold digital eye — he counts the hairs on your head. If you’re anxious about power or the economy, remember every earthly kingdom is temporary, and the one that isn’t cannot be shaken. If AI unsettles you, remember your worth was never rooted in what you produce. And if you’ve been burned by a false shepherd, look past the wolf and fix your eyes on the real one. Christ has already overcome the world. Which of these five hit closest to home for you this week? I’d genuinely like to know — reply or leave a comment. Expecting Nothing in Return

In this episode, we unpack what a rude interaction at a grocery store checkout counter reveals about Jesus’ command to “expect nothing in return” in Luke 6. We explore three transformative Greek words—Apelpizō (undoing expectation in advance), Chrēstos (useful, active kindness), and Entrusting (ongoing surrender)—along with insights from Church Fathers like Chrysostom, Augustine, and Calvin. 📖 Discussion & Study Guide Part 1 — Naming the Trap * Think of a recent moment where someone was rude or unfair to you. What was your actual first instinct? * Which default response do you lean toward: matching their tone, silently stewing, escalating to authority, or replaying it in your head? * Has your “kindness” ever secretly been a strategy to earn a better response? What did it feel like when that strategy failed? Part 2 — Understanding the Text * Apelpizō (Luke 6:35): What is the difference between repression (swallowing hurt) and apelpizō (releasing expectations in advance)? * Chrēstos (Luke 6:35 / Romans 2:4): Chrēstos describes active usefulness toward someone’s good. Where in your week is there a gap between how warmly you feel toward someone and how actively good you are toward them? * The Imperfect Tense (1 Peter 2:23): Why is it freeing to view “entrusing yourself to God” as a continuous, repeatable practice rather than a single act of willpower? Part 3 — Living It Out * The Second Wound: Augustine notes that bearing a wrong patiently avoids adding a second wound (rehearsing and stewing). How can you stop at the first wound this week? * Calvin’s “Glorious Victory”: Where in your life is there a gap between what looks like winning (having the last word) and what Scripture calls victory? 📚 Primary Sources & Further Reading * Augustine – On Patience (De Patientia) * John Chrysostom – Homilies on the Gospel of Matthew (Homily 18) * John Calvin – Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans (12:17–21) * Tertullian – Apology (Chapter 3) * Dietrich Bonhoeffer – The Cost of Discipleship * Corrie ten Boom – The Hiding Place ☕ Support & Connect * ☕ Buy Me a Coffee (http://buymeacoffee.com/christianerudition): Support independent theological research. * 📺 Watch on YouTube (https://youtu.be/OxplANw5Sp4): Watch the full visual essay version of this study.
