Chronically Illing Out | E51 - Giving Thanks as a New Season Rolls In
Ch-illing In Review Fall shows up in our bodies before it shows up on the calendar. Nick’s knees have started catching mid-step, and Soso, three weeks sick and now on antibiotics, put it plainly: chronic illness is hard enough, but “if you’re sick on top of being ill,” everything gets heavy. Beth went up Mount Rainier to shoot this week’s meditation, needed her inhaler at 5,400 feet, and spent hours in line at a gate where, she said, visitors now hand over ID and get asked where they’re from — with a ranger describing a $250 charge for non-citizens. Frank Johnson said in the chat he’d heard the same about the Everglades. Steph reminded us the Park Service was among the first to push back in 2016. Then friend of the show, Jay flagged OCD Awareness Week, and the hour found its sharpest stretch. Soso drew the line between obsessive-compulsive disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality traits, Beth described her husband’s “what if we need that” struggle, and another audience member added that growing up poor teaches the same habit — which means one behavior can be a symptom, a scar, or a survival skill, and it’s worth knowing which before we judge it. What you can do Heading to a national park? Check that park’s fees page on nps.gov before you go. If you’re asked for ID or citizenship at the gate, write down the date, the location, and exactly what you were told, then send it to your members of Congress. ~ Nick Paro, Beth Cruz, Soso, and Stephanie Wilson Disclaimer Chronically Illing Out is a podcast and weekly roundtable discussion that provides a safe space for real chronic illness and mental health conversations—by people with lived experience. Chronically Illing Out | E50 - Beginning A New Month
Chilling in Review We open October the way we normally open most things — sideways. Through a 12-foot skeleton that won’t fit on Beth’s balcony and a yellow orb weaver Nick refuses to evict from his fence line — before turning to the month’s heavier calendar. Beth names Breast Cancer Awareness Month (”Protect Second Base”) and reminds listeners that men get breast cancer too; Nick adds Domestic Violence Awareness Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month, warning that the Texas v. Kennedy fight over Section 504 opens the door to a federal slide back toward disability segregation. The middle stretch drifts into plague jokes, “Maple Railroad” escape plans, and Airplane! quotes, and that drift is the point: gallows humor is how this group metabolizes a timeline Beth calls “the stupidest one.” Underneath it run real weights — Steph preparing to fly west to see her father through cognitive decline, Nick naming how hard it is to have multiple family members sick, Beth repeating the 988 line after a loss close to home. The method on display is the show’s own: say the hard thing, laugh anyway, and keep showing up — now two episodes shy of a full year. Chronically Illing Out | E49 - Building the Start of the Week
Summary Nick, Beth, Doc Steph, and Soso opened with a living armadillo, a salty squirrel, and a meme war. Overall, today was about growing up. Steph described her son turning up grumpy and private at lunch, and the relief she felt. A kid who doesn’t want to talk about his life has a life of his own. Beth, after raising four kids through their own chronic illnesses, is still finding herself, now through kindness rocks, a new business license, and her first public outing with her walker. From children’s TV — Number Blocks, Alpha Blocks, Quebec’s publicly funded Passe-Partout — the talk turned to who pays for education. Nick traced the damage from standardized testing, property-tax funding, and voucher schemes, arguing that No Child Left Behind “ended up leaving all kids behind because no kid could get ahead.” Steph pointed to Nikole Hannah-Jones’s writing on choosing public school for her own daughter. It raises a hard question: can a family’s choice ever fix “a systemic problem”? The panel didn’t settle it. They did make the case that schools built around play, field trips, and real life skills are a choice a country makes, not a luxury. Their closing line said the same about community: “We’re done being sick of this shit. So now we’re doing this shit.” ~ Nick Paro, Beth Cruz, Stephanie Wilson, and Soso Disclaimer Chronically Illing Out is a podcast and weekly roundtable discussion that provides a safe space for real chronic illness and mental health conversations—by people with lived experience.
