Chronicles from the Lake Ladoga Shores is a storytelling audiobook series exploring Karelian folklore collected in 1879stories of giants who shaped ancient landscapes, warriors who defended communities not empires, and treasures buried beneath stones. Accompanied by Libretto Orchestra's symphonic folk metal, this 12-episode series examines how borderland peoples preserve memory through landscape itself: through stones, lakes, and forests that remember what humans forget. A journey where history and legend blur, where the past remains carved in the land.
Episode 12: Chronicles of Stone | Libretto Short Stories
After four years walking the Lake Ladoga landscape, Theodor Schvindt realizes he's been reading a text written not in ink but in granite. The stones remember what the burned chronicles forgot: fortress walls speak of ancient wars, battlefield soil holds the dead, lake depths hide monastery bells, and every landscape feature carries stories that outlast empires. Join us for the final chapter where all the stories converge into one vast chronicle written in stone, waiting to be read by those willing to walk the land and listen.

Episode 11: The Burning Monastery | Libretto Short Stories
Three hundred years of chronicles documenting the history of Lake Ladoga—births and deaths, saints and sinners, wars and harvests—all turned to ash when Swedish forces burned the Orusjärvi monastery. The monks tried to hide what they could, casting bells into lakes and treasures into wells, but the library burned and centuries of accumulated knowledge vanished in an afternoon. This is the story of catastrophic cultural loss and the stubborn survival of faith when all its institutional supports are destroyed.

Episode 10: Kalmistu - The Days of the Dead | Libretto Short Stories
Twice a year—at Kekri in autumn and Easter in spring—the boundary between living and dead grew thin. Families gathered in graveyards to feast with their ancestors, leaving food on graves, speaking to the departed as if they could hear. Because they believed the dead could hear, were present, were still part of the community. Experience the beautiful practice of pomiluttaminen, where mourning and celebration merged, and death was not ending but transformation.
