We Are the Church | Acts 2:42-47 | Belong | Brendan Fox
This week, Brendan Fox begins a four-week series at what it means to be the church, starting with belonging. We were created for connection, but community comes with a problem: other people. Two pictures from Scripture show us what belonging looks like. It’s a family devoted to teaching, fellowship, shared meals, prayer, and generosity (Acts 2), and a body where every part is needed (1 Corinthians 12).
Belonging blesses us, blesses others (Hebrews 10) and shows the world Christ’s love (John 13). Dietrich Bonhoeffer warned that loving our dream of Christian community more than the real community in front of us can destroy the very community we long for. In response, we’re invited to commit to being part of CHS in 2027.
Key principles:
We were made for connection, and church is where we find it.
No church will match the ideal, but God works in the mess.
Church is a family, devoted to God and to one another.
Church is a body, and every part is needed.
If you’ve been hurt, don’t stay away. Step back in.

Minor Prophets | Malachi | Return to Me | Brendan Fox
Malachi is the last of the Minor Prophets. It was written for people who had come home from exile but felt let down. Questioning God’s love, they brought him their leftovers, and wondered if serving him was meaningless. God answers each complaint. He uncovers the deeper problem. He promises a day when He will confront evil and bring healing, pointing ahead to Jesus, the Sun of Righteousness. Like a swimmer who drifts down the beach without noticing, we can slowly drift from God, and his invitation to us is still the same: “Return to me, and I will return to you.”
Key principles:
God never gives up on us. He keeps calling us back.
We can drift without noticing, so ask God to show us where.
Give God your best, not your leftovers.
Trust God’s timing. He will come, confront evil and bring healing.
Returning is always possible, and Jesus has already dealt with our sin.

Minor Prophets | Habakkuk | How long oh Lord? | Jonathan Tysick
Habakkuk is a dialogue between the prophet and God about the problem of evil and injustice. Habakkuk questions why God allows wickedness and suffering, then learns that God will judge evil in His time. The book concludes with Habakkuk choosing to trust God despite difficult circumstances.
Key principles:
Bring honest questions and doubts to God.
God’s timing and purposes may exceed our understanding.
“The righteous shall live by faith.”
Trust God even when circumstances are uncertain.
True faith rejoices in God, not merely in blessings.
