Sometimes, our way of preaching or understanding the gospel is too self-centered; instead of appreciating how we’re blessed to take part in God’s story, we take blessing to mean that God fixes what’s wrong with our story. Something similar might be said of the residents of Capernaum. He had already graciously healed many of them of illnesses and demonic influence, and one imagines that they were grateful. But when it was time for him to leave, they tried to stop him (4:42-44).

Episode 53: Setting the oppressed free
When Jesus quoted from Isaiah in Nazareth, he proclaimed “the year of the Lord’s favor” (4:19). This is a reference to the Old Testament tradition of Jubilee, in which debts were canceled and slaves were freed. Against that background, we can see Jesus fulfilling his calling as Messiah in Capernaum, first by freeing a man from demonic oppression, and then healing Peter’s mother-in-law of an oppressive illness. Both healing stories illustrate Jesus’ authority, as well as what interpreters call “the messianic secret” (4:38-41).

Episode 52: The authority of Jesus
The people of Nazareth had wanted Jesus to do a miracle like he did in Capernaum—and the only one they got was his miraculous escape from their clutches. His next stop, ironically, is Capernaum. On the Sabbath, he once again preaches in the synagogue. And again, the response is positive: people are amazed at the authority with which he teaches (4:31-32). But an even more dramatic demonstration of his authority followed. When he commanded a demon to come out of a man, the demon immediately obeyed, and the people marveled even more (vss. 33-37).
