About Church of Christ Lohn Podcast

The Church of Christ is a Christian fellowship rooted in the Restoration Movement of the early 19th century, which sought to return to the original, apostolic model of Christianity as revealed in the New Testament. With no denominational headquarters or human creed, the Church of Christ emphasizes the Bible alone as its authority in faith and practice. Members are simply called “Christians,” and congregations are autonomous, governed by elders and served by deacons, evangelists, and teachers. Historically, the movement began in the United States through the efforts of leaders like Alexander Campbell, Barton W. Stone, and Thomas Campbell, who rejected man-made divisions in Christianity and pleaded for unity based on Scripture alone. Churches of Christ practice baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, observe the Lord’s Supper every Sunday, and maintain a cappella worship, following the New Testament example. Today, the Church of Christ spans the globe, dedicated to restoring New Testament Christianity in doctrine, worship, and daily living.

   Mathew Chapter 26-28

Matthew 26–28: From the cross to the commission Matthew 26–28 is the climax of Matthew’s Gospel. These chapters cover Jesus’ betrayal, arrest, trial, crucifixion, burial, resurrection, and the Great Commission. Matthew 26 – Betrayal and surrender Jesus knows His death is coming. He tells His disciples that He will be crucified, while the religious leaders are secretly planning how to arrest Him. A woman anoints Jesus with expensive perfume. The disciples see it as waste, but Jesus says she is preparing Him for burial. Right after that, Judas agrees to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. At the Last Supper, Jesus tells the disciples that one of them will betray Him. He then takes the bread and cup and connects them to His coming death. His body will be given. His blood will be poured out for the forgiveness of sins. Later, in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prays: “Yet not as I will, but as you will.”Matthew 26:39 That is the heart of this chapter: surrender. Jesus knows exactly what the cross will cost Him, but He chooses obedience to the Father. Judas arrives and betrays Jesus with a kiss. Jesus is arrested and taken before the Jewish leaders. Meanwhile Peter, who had confidently promised never to abandon Jesus, denies knowing Him three times. The chapter shows a powerful contrast: Jesus remains faithful while everyone around Him begins to fall apart. Matthew 27 – The crucifixion Jesus is taken before Pontius Pilate. Pilate gives the crowd a choice between Jesus and Barabbas. They choose Barabbas. Barabbas is guilty, yet he walks free. Jesus is innocent, yet He is condemned. That gives us a picture of the Gospel itself. The guilty are set free because Jesus takes their place. Jesus is mocked, beaten, given a crown of thorns, and led to Golgotha. He is crucified under a sign declaring: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” Even while hanging on the cross, people mock Him. Eventually darkness covers the land and Jesus cries out: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Jesus then gives up His spirit. At that moment, the curtain in the temple is torn from top to bottom. That curtain had represented separation between sinful people and the presence of God. Through the death of Jesus, the way to God has been opened. A Roman centurion watching everything says: “Surely he was the Son of God!” Jesus is then buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. A large stone is rolled across the entrance, and guards are stationed there. To the disciples, everything probably looked finished. But it wasn’t. Matthew 28 – The resurrection and the mission Early Sunday morning, women go to the tomb. An angel tells them: “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.” That sentence changes everything. Jesus had been crucified. Jesus had been buried. But Jesus is alive. The women actually encounter the risen Jesus and worship Him. Later, Jesus meets His disciples in Galilee and gives them their mission. He says: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Then He commands them: “Go and make disciples of all nations.” They are to baptize people and teach them to obey everything Jesus commanded. Matthew begins with Jesus being called Immanuel — God with us. Matthew ends with Jesus saying: “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” The main message Matthew 26 shows us surrender. Matthew 27 shows us sacrifice. Matthew 28 shows us victory and mission. Jesus surrendered to the Father. Jesus sacrificed Himself for sinners. Jesus rose from the dead. And then Jesus sent His followers into the world. The cross wasn’t the end of the story. The empty tomb wasn’t even the end of the story. The story continues through every believer who obeys the command of Jesus: Go. Make disciples. Teach them. And remember that Christ is with you.

   Mathew 24-25

Matthew 24–25: Be ready, stay faithful Matthew 24 – Jesus teaches about the end Matthew 24 begins with Jesus leaving the temple. The disciples point out the impressive temple buildings. Jesus responds with something shocking: “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”Matthew 24:2 The disciples later ask Him two questions: “When will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” That launches what is often called the Olivet Discourse. Jesus is talking about judgment, persecution, deception, the destruction of Jerusalem, His future return, and the end of the age. Some of His words clearly point toward the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. Other parts point beyond that toward His final return. The exact timeline has been debated for centuries. But Jesus’ main warning is not hard to understand: Don’t be deceived. Don’t panic. Don’t fall away. Stay faithful. False messiahs and deception The first thing Jesus warns about is deception. “Watch out that no one deceives you.” He says false messiahs will come. People will claim spiritual authority. People will claim to speak for God. Some will even perform impressive signs. Jesus repeatedly warns His followers not to be fooled. That matters. Jesus does not say: Believe everyone who claims to speak in My name. He says: Be careful. Faith does not mean gullibility. Christians are supposed to know Scripture well enough to recognize counterfeit teaching. Wars, disasters, and suffering Jesus says there will be: “Wars and rumors of wars.” He also mentions famines and earthquakes. But then He says something important: “See to it that you are not alarmed.” These events are serious. But Jesus says: “Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.” He calls them: “The beginning of birth pains.” In other words, trouble in the world should not automatically cause Christians to panic and declare that the end must be happening immediately. Jesus tells His followers to expect a broken world. The command is not panic. The command is faithfulness. Persecution and falling away Jesus tells the disciples that they will be persecuted because of Him. Some will be hated. Some will be betrayed. Some will abandon the faith. False prophets will appear. Jesus says: “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.” That is a serious warning. The danger is not only persecution from outside the church. The danger is also spiritual coldness inside the believer. Jesus says: “The one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” The message is endurance. Faithfulness is tested when following Jesus becomes costly. The gospel goes to the nations Jesus says: “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Even in a chapter filled with judgment and suffering, Jesus keeps the mission of the gospel at the center. The world may become hostile. Governments may change. False teachers may appear. But the gospel continues moving forward. The church is not told to hide. The church is told to remain faithful to its mission. The abomination and great distress Jesus then speaks about what He calls: “The abomination that causes desolation.” This language comes from the book of Daniel. Jesus warns people in Judea to flee when this event occurs. Many interpreters understand at least part of this warning as pointing toward the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple by Rome in A.D. 70. Others also see these words as pointing forward to events connected with the final end of the age. Either way, Jesus is describing severe judgment and suffering. He warns His followers not to be fooled during times of chaos. False messiahs will appear. People will say: “There He is!” Jesus says not to believe them. His return will not be hidden. The coming of the Son of Man Jesus compares His return to lightning. “As lightning that comes from t

   Mathew 22-23

Matthew 22–23: The King confronts false religion Matthew 22 – The invitation, the greatest commandment, and the identity of Christ Matthew 22 begins with Jesus telling the parable of the wedding banquet. A king prepares a wedding feast for his son and sends servants to invite the guests. But the invited guests refuse to come. Some ignore the invitation. Others mistreat and even kill the king’s servants. The king then sends his servants out into the streets and invites anyone they can find. The banquet fills with guests. The picture is clear. God invited His people into His kingdom, but many rejected Him and rejected the prophets He sent. Now the invitation is going outward. The kingdom is open to those who respond. But Jesus also warns that simply being around the celebration isn’t enough. One man enters without proper wedding clothes and is removed. Jesus ends with: “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”Matthew 22:14 The point is that God’s invitation is generous, but it still requires a genuine response. You can be invited. You can be near religious things. You can even appear to belong. But God knows the heart. Paying taxes to Caesar The Pharisees then try to trap Jesus. They ask whether it is lawful to pay taxes to Caesar. It looks like there is no safe answer. If Jesus says no, they can accuse Him of rebellion against Rome. If He says yes, He risks angering Jews who hated Roman taxation. Jesus asks them to show Him a coin. He asks: “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” They answer: “Caesar’s.” Jesus replies: “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”Matthew 22:21 That answer shuts them down. But it also says something deeper. The coin bears Caesar’s image. Human beings bear God’s image. Caesar may have a claim on the coin. God has a claim on your life. The Sadducees question the resurrection Next the Sadducees come to Jesus. They don’t believe in the resurrection, so they create an exaggerated hypothetical situation about a woman who had seven husbands. They ask which man will be her husband in the resurrection. Jesus tells them: “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.” That is a hard statement. These are religious leaders. They know religious traditions. But Jesus says they don’t truly understand Scripture or God’s power. He explains that resurrection life will not simply be an extension of earthly life. Then He points to God’s words to Moses: “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Jesus says: “He is not the God of the dead but of the living.” The resurrection is real. Death is not the end. The greatest commandment One of the Pharisees asks Jesus: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus answers: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Then He gives the second: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus says: “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” This is not Jesus reducing obedience to warm feelings. Biblical love includes loyalty, obedience, sacrifice, and action. Love God completely. Love people genuinely. Everything else flows from that. A person can know Scripture, attend worship, follow religious traditions, and still miss the point if there is no love for God and no love for people. Whose Son is the Messiah? Jesus then turns the questioning around. He asks the Pharisees: “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They answer: “The son of David.” That answer is correct, but incomplete. Jesus quotes Psalm 110: “The Lord said to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.’” Then Jesus asks: If David calls the Messiah “Lord,” how can the Messiah simply be David’s son? Jesus is pushing them to recognize that the Messiah is more than a human descendant of David. He is David’s Lord. Jesus is forcing the religious leaders to confront the questio
