Psycho (1960) vs Peeping Tom (1960): Who Invented the Modern Movie Killer? | CinemaJam VS 43
Same year, same blueprint: two killers hiding in plain sight, one with a motel and one with a camera. This week on CinemaJam Versus: Psycho (1960, dir. Alfred Hitchcock) vs Peeping Tom (1960, dir. Michael Powell). Sebastian brings the British shocker that was rediscovered long after its release. Pablo brings the Hitchcock landmark everyone has copied. Six rounds, Anthony Perkins vs Karlheinz Böhm, Bernard Herrmann's violins vs a score Pablo calls generic, and one question that splits the hosts: is Peeping Tom a slasher film? Plus: thank you for 1,200+ subscribers on YouTube! What we get into: - Peeping Tom puts the killer at the center of the movie, a choice Sebastian says he didn't see again until the 2000s: "This is our hero, this is our villain, everything in the movie is around him." - A killer who tries to look normal vs a killer who never does: Perkins vs Böhm. - How Hitchcock plants a newspaper in your head and keeps you hooked on it for ten minutes. - The skull Pablo swears is hidden in the final shot (Sebastian thinks he imagined it). - Slasher, or something else? In a Violent Nature, Terrifier, and the killer's point of view. Six rounds, one winner. Watch to find out who survives. Tigers Are Not Afraid: Narco Ghosts told from the kids point of view | CinemaJam Ep. 101
Five kids, a stolen phone, and a cartel poster hunting them down. The ghosts are the least of their worries. We continue our series Fear Speaks Spanish with Tigers Are Not Afraid (Vuelven, 2017), written and directed by Mexican filmmaker Issa López. Estrella loses her mother to the narco war and joins a street gang of children led by El Shine, who stole the wrong phone from the wrong people. Armed with three wishes, a trail of blood guiding her, and a tiger painted on the walls, the film blends dark fairy tale with urban horror, with Guillermo del Toro serving as its great fairy godfather.Sebastián chose it for its 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and for something more personal: as Colombians who grew up in the '80s and '90s, the violence chasing these children is not fiction. We discuss why social realism works better than the supernatural, why the jump scares telegraph themselves, the natural performances of Paola Lara and Juan Ramón López (with echoes of Rodrigo D: No futuro), Tenoch Huerta before he was Namor, and the inevitable comparisons to Pan's Labyrinth and La Llorona. In spoilers: the children's deaths, the final meadow, and what it means for tigers not to be afraid. And some news: we've reached 1,000 subscribers on YouTube and we're celebrating with merch. Hollywood made Freddy and Jason fight in 2003 and nobody really won. Tonight we finish it with the originals: no sequels, no remakes. This week on CinemaJam Versus: Friday the 13th (1980, dir. Sean S. Cunningham) vs A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984, written and directed by Wes Craven). The movie that sold a date before it had a script vs the movie that saved New Line Cinema. Summer camp vs your bedroom, the lake vs the dream. Sebastian and Pablo put the two '80s horror icons through six rounds, before Jason was Jason and Freddy was still Fred. Plus: it's CinemaJam's two-year anniversary, and the month we crossed 1,000 subscribers on YouTube.
