This land is preordained to be in the hands of Americans. and American systems of government, of economics, of ideology. That is what this land and its people are supposed to be. And if its people aren't on board, well, then they can just be slaughtered. Now, by most accounts, the term Manifest Destiny first appeared in 1845 in a piece by John O'Sullivan, the Christian nationalist editor of the Democratic Review advocating for the annexation of Texas. Sullivan condemned any opposition to the annexation of Texas as, quote, limiting our greatness, our meaning Americans or white Anglo-Americans. and, quote, checking the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions, unquote.
