About City Line Church Sermons

City Line Church is a diverse church in Bala Cynwyd, PA, drawing from a wide range of vocations, ethnicities, life stages, and religious backgrounds. We work in schools, hospitals, stores, offices and in the home. We are from the Philadelphia area, and we are from other parts of the country, and even the world. We are singles, couples, young families, and grandparents. However you might come, you are all welcomed – free to question, free to watch, free to care and to be cared for. And all along the way, the hope that draws us all together is that we might understand and experience more fully God’s love and goodness in Jesus Christ…for us, for you, for our city, and our world.

   Counted Righteous

Romans 4:1-25 Paul has just declared that no one is justified by works of the law, and now he calls the patriarch himself to the witness stand. Abraham was not declared righteous because of his obedience or his circumcision. He believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness. That word “counted” carries the weight of the whole chapter. Justification is not a wage we earn but a gift God credits to the ungodly. Paul shows that this has always been the way of God’s covenant, so that Abraham could become the father of all who believe, Jew and Gentile alike, and heir of the world. Abraham’s faith was not wishful thinking. It was trust in the God who gives life to the dead and calls into existence things that do not exist. That same God raised Jesus from the dead for our justification. Our hope rests not on ourselves but on the faithfulness of the One who promised.

   Boasting is Excluded

Romans 3:27-31 Having turned, in the larger context of his letter, to justification by faith, Paul begins to answer important questions the church at Rome will have. Boasting is the external expression of pride in our hearts. And Paul says it has no place in our justification because our justification is only by Faith. In reviewing these questions, we are invited into an expansive story of salvation through faith that is available to all people. And we are called as believers to a life that upholds the moral demands of the law upon our lives.

   The Righteousness of God

Romans 3:21-26 Few paragraphs in all of Scripture capture the heart of the gospel more clearly than these verses. Into humanity's hopeless situation comes the glorious announcement: "But now." God has revealed a righteousness apart from the Law—not by lowering his standards but by fulfilling them in Jesus Christ. At the cross, God demonstrates both his perfect justice and his astonishing mercy. Sin is neither ignored nor excused; it is judged fully in the crucified Messiah. Christ becomes the true mercy seat where God's holiness and grace meet. We are justified freely by grace through faith, not because faith is a work we perform but because it receives the finished work of Christ. Here we see the very heart of God's covenant faithfulness. The God who promised redemption throughout the Old Testament has now accomplished it through his Son. Our standing before God rests not upon our obedience but upon Christ's. Therefore our confidence is secure because it rests entirely upon the righteousness of another.
