Episode 4.0 - Denise and Dora
In this episode, we’re taking a deep dive into accessibility, creativity, and confidence-building in computer science education. Alan Ireland from CodeVA sits down with two incredible guests: Denise Orndorff, an instructional technology coach from Frederick County Public Schools, and Dora Palfi, co-founder and CEO of Imagi—an EdTech company on a mission to make coding fun, inclusive, and accessible for all students.
You’ll hear how Imagi is creating tools that not only engage students through visual, creative coding, but also empower teachers—regardless of their technical background—to confidently bring computer science into the classroom. Denise shares powerful stories from her own experience using Imagi, from working with nonverbal kindergarteners to helping middle schoolers with special education needs retain coding skills over the summer.
We’ll also explore what accessibility really means in a CS context—from navigating the digital divide to embracing unplugged activities—and how Imagi is helping to bridge those gaps. Plus, you’ll learn about their new AI-powered "debugging buddy," designed to support students as they troubleshoot their code, and how hands-on learning leads to those unforgettable "wow" moments.
Whether you're a seasoned CS educator or just dipping your toes into tech, this conversation is packed with insights, inspiration, and practical ideas to help make computer science more approachable and impactful for every learner.

Episode 3.5 - Jon & Joe
In this episode, we’re digging into one of the most relevant questions in CS education today: should teachers try to “keep up” with emerging technologies, or is it more impactful to focus on the foundational concepts that transcend languages and platforms? We talk about what it's like to be a new teacher trying to create a modern classroom, and how the pressure to chase what’s new can sometimes distract from the core skills that truly transfer.
We also explore the pedagogical debate between block-based and text-based coding—what rigor looks like in each, what skills they develop, and when it makes sense to use one over the other. There’s a great discussion on using whiteboards as a powerful tool for teaching coding, plus a look at two standout resource books that support foundational learning: A to Z of CS Education by Shuchi Grover, and Coding Art by Mathias Funk and Yu Zhang, a creative take on learning through visual projects.
Finally, we dive into the concepts of inductive vs. deductive learning in CS, and how giving students agency in their learning journey can shape not just what they learn, but how they engage with it.
