Episode 12: Eating Disorders, Self-Harm, and Their Relationship to Fundamentalism
What’s up, sinners? Welcome to Episode 12 of Clothesline, the lighthearted, dark-humoured podcast about growing up in cults. We’re Chris and Syd, two nonbinary people in their 30s who grew up homeschooled in fundamentalist evangelical Christian purity culture. This episode was hard to start, but could probably extend for several episodes (and it just might). Some of the topics in this episode include: * Random conversations about travel, now that Syd is back from their US trip * Aforementioned US trip and how Syd blue-balled their own healing (and became undead?!) * An overview of our struggles with disordered eating and self-harm, and how that looks today * What part growing up in fundamentalist evangelicalism had to play in our relationships with our physical bodies, but our mental health as well * How disordered eating and self-harm was a way to take ownership of our bodies when we felt out of control * The role of Chris’s active eating disorder in their ongoing deconstruction …and more. Episode 11: Sex Education (or Lack Thereof) and Our Relationship to Our Bodies After Surviving Purity Culture
What’s up, sinners? Welcome to Episode 11 of Clothesline, the lighthearted, dark-humoured podcast about growing up in cults. We’re Chris and Syd, two nonbinary people in their 30s who grew up homeschooled in fundamentalist evangelical Christian purity culture. This episode is heavy, not gonna lie. We talk about what sex education we had (or didn’t), our relationship to our physical bodies throughout our lives, particularly after purity culture, and the shame and guilt we grew up associating with pleasure. Some of the topics in this episode include: * What did sex ed look like for us, as sheltered homeschooled Christian kids? * The book that taught us more about our bodies than our parents did * Syd’s hilariously gross “sex ed” book that wasn’t (watermelon?!) * A traumatic experience when Syd was 12 that they’re still grappling with now * How tattoos and top surgery have helped us take ownership of our physical bodies and feel more at home in our meat suits …and more. P.S. Chris’s audio changes to better quality halfway through because they remembered to hit “record” on their actual mic. Forgive us our sins. Wanna talk to us? Episode 10: Spiritual Gifts Quiz and Exposing Our Indoctrinated (Struggling) Teenage Selves
What’s up, sinners? Welcome to Episode 10 of Clothesline, the lighthearted, dark-humoured podcast about growing up in cults. We’re Chris and Syd, two nonbinary people in their 30s who grew up homeschooled in fundamentalist evangelical Christian purity culture. In this episode, Chris has some big news: they found our blogs from when we were 15/16 and met each other. Cringe with us while we read our bios and bits of blog posts about our spiritual lives, which of course led us into a conversation about spiritual gifts, AKA God-given superpowers. Some of the topics in this episode include: * Reading directly from our teenage blogs about our beliefs * How Chris claimed to hate homosexuality (and terrorism) * Syd’s overcompensation with performing spiritual devotion, including witnessing at Walmart * We take a spiritual gifts quiz and read all the questions out loud! * Personalised Blessing Generator * What HAS remained consistent with us since then, based on our blog posts …and more. Episode 09: Hallucinations, Dissociative Amnesia, and the Stress of Deconstruction
What’s up, sinners? Welcome to Episode 09 of Clothesline, the lighthearted, dark-humoured podcast about growing up in cults. We’re Chris and Syd, two nonbinary people in their 30s who grew up homeschooled in fundamentalist evangelical Christian purity culture. This episode is a great, albeit a touch chaotic, conversation about mental health and its relation to stress. We talk about gaps in our memory during specific times in our life as well as with specific topics, and how deconstruction and a desire to reconcile with loved ones still in our belief systems of origin can contribute to the stress. Some of the topics in this episode include: * A potentially haunted audio recording * Hallucinations: what are they really like, and what causes them for us? * Dissociative Amnesia * Our first novel-writing experiences being such a fun escape * Deconstruction and the simplicity of staying ignorant/in a box * Doing the heavy lifting while trying to strengthen a relationship with parents still indoctrinated …and more. Episode 08: Staying Small, Self-Advocacy, and Fear of Receiving Care
What’s up, sinners? Welcome to Episode 08 of Clothesline, the lighthearted, dark-humoured podcast about growing up in cults. We’re Chris and Syd, two nonbinary people in their 30s who grew up homeschooled in fundamentalist evangelical Christian purity culture. In this episode, we expand on some additional thoughts Chris had following our prior conversation in Episode 07 about Calvinism. That related to a journal entry of theirs from age 19 during a crisis of faith, which also tied into a conversation Syd had with a family member who has trouble advocating for themselves. The root of it all? Fear. Some of the topics in this episode include: * The Calvinist dilemma: to treat everyone like saints, or conversion projects? * Chris’s journal entry from 2012 during a final attempt at committing to their faith of origin * How this belief system is built on a foundation of fear and control * Why advocating for ourselves is scary, and an example from Syd’s work on film sets of why “staying small” cannot be an option * “The Clothesline of Sin” and #HeathenPartyMode * An exciting announcement about an upcoming collaboration with Jacob from the Ex Homeschoolers Club! …and more. Episode 07: Predestination, Calvinism, Free Will, and Worldly Confusion
What’s up, sinners? Welcome to Episode 06 of Clothesline, the lighthearted, dark-humoured podcast about growing up in cults. We’re Chris and Syd, two nonbinary people in their 30s who grew up homeschooled in fundamentalist evangelical Christian purity culture. In this episode, we talk about growing up with Calvinist principles (namely TULIP and predestination), free will, and how we felt totally clueless when we left the church and lost that framework we’d always had. Some of the topics in this episode include: * What is TULIP? Syd introduces Chris to these principles. Chris did not like. * Predestination (make it make sense) * Free will (HEATHEN PARTY MODE) * Cats (how could we not?) * Gaslighting ourselves (still) about leaving the church and how the world suddenly seemed so…open …and more. Episode 06: Inner Child, Inner Teenager, and Christian Emo Rock Music
In this episode, we talk about our inner children, inner teens, and mitigate the heaviness by reminiscing about Christian emo rock music and other gems of that bygone era. Some of the topics in this episode include: * Struggling with bitterness against our teenage selves * Performing devotion to our faith by forcing ourselves into a state of spiritual psychosis and waiting to feel like everyone else * Missionary tendencies * Being the oldest siblings: was that a way to experience a childhood we didn’t get? * Memory gaps in childhood causing us to gaslight ourselves * Chris’s kitten, Connie, being impossibly adorable (if you’re watching) * Which Christian rock band did Syd see in concert as a teenager? * What is the meaning of HEATHEN PARTY MODE? …and more. Episode 03: Parental Relationships
Welcome to Episode 03 of the Clothesline podcast! We’re Chris and Syd, two nonbinary people in their 30s who grew up homeschooled in fundamentalist evangelical Christian purity culture. This is where we talk about it in a lighthearted, dark-humoured way. Some of the topics in this episode include: * The confusion of wanting to be close to our parents, but not being able to * Chris navigating a shifting relationship with their parents as their self-expression gets stronger * Syd coming out as nonbinary to their parents as an answer to being asked “Why won’t you come to church with us?” * The deification of parents in fundamentalist cults, like the ones we grew up in …and more.
