The Woman at the Well: Do We Really Know Her Story?
We think we know the woman at the well.
Five husbands. Living with a man who was not her husband. Alone at the well. For generations, those details have been used to tell us who she was—and why Jesus stopped to speak with her.
But what if we have added things to her story that Scripture never actually tells us?
What if, instead of beginning with assumptions about her morality, shame, or reputation, we simply read what John says—and pay attention to what Jesus says and does?
In this episode, I read John 4:4–42 and take a closer look at one of the most familiar encounters in Scripture. We’ll consider the cultural realities surrounding this woman, the assumptions that have followed her for generations, and a conversation with Jesus that may look very different when we allow the text—not tradition—to tell us who she was.
You may know the story.
But you might not know her.

Messy Mom Moments: Imperfect, Without Regret
As my son prepares for marriage, I find myself looking back at the mischievous little boy he was, the pain he carried through our divorce, and the man he chose to become.
This is a reflection on imperfect motherhood, the difference between responsibility and lifelong shame, and why our hardest moments do not deserve sole authorship of our children’s stories. We cannot change the mothers we were—but we can honor the love, repair, resilience, and grace woven through the mess.

Bitter: When Telling the Truth Gets Mistaken for Not Moving On
When did telling the truth about something bitter become the same thing as becoming bitter?
In this episode, Kim Hansen Petroni challenges the fear of “becoming bitter”—particularly within faith communities where forgiveness, letting go, and moving on can become expectations placed on people who are still living with the effects of betrayal and injustice.
Through Scripture, the symbolism of Passover's bitter herbs, and her own experience with prolonged conflict and litigation, Kim explores an important distinction: Is speaking the truth evidence of bitterness—or can forcing truth underground actually give bitterness a place to grow?
Betrayal should bother us. Deception should bother us. Injustice should bother us. Healing doesn't require pretending the bitter parts of our stories tasted sweet.
The bitter herbs can remain part of the story without becoming the entire meal.
