Pakistan’s Energy Paradox: Dr. Khalid Waleed Discusses the Challenges of Transitioning from Coal to Clean Energy (Episode 12)
In today's episode of Coal Katha, our guest is Dr. Khalid Waleed, who holds a PhD in Energy Economics and is an expert in energy transition. Dr. Waleed advocates for indigenous approaches to energy development, emphasizing the need for solutions rooted in local context. In this program, he discusses Pakistan's challenges in transitioning from coal to cleaner, safer energy sources and sheds light on the current state of Pakistan's energy policies.
Dr. Khalid critically examines what kind of energy policies Pakistan needs to adopt in order to address the country's long-term energy security and climate goals. He highlights the paradox in Pakistan's stance on climate justice: while Pakistan claims climate injustice in international forums and demands compensation for the damage caused by global carbon emissions, it continues to rely heavily on coal as a primary energy source domestically.
The discussion delves into the contradictions and complexities of Pakistan's energy strategy, the potential for renewable energy, and what must change for Pakistan to move towards a more sustainable and equitable energy future. These and other important issues related to energy policy and transition are thoroughly explored in today's program.

Shaheera Tahir Discusses Shift from Imported to Local Coal in Pakistan’s Energy Sector (Episode 11)
In today's episode of Coal Katha, our guest, energy expert Shaheera Tahir, discusses coal projects in Pakistan, focusing particularly on the government's recent decision to convert power projects from imported coal to local coal. She explains the rationale behind this policy shift, the feasibility of such a move, and its potential impacts on the energy sector and the broader economy.
Shaheera highlights that one of the primary reasons behind the government's decision is to reduce Pakistan's dependence on expensive imported coal, which has significantly strained the country's foreign exchange reserves. By utilizing local coal, especially from the Thar Desert, the government aims to lower the import bill and enhance energy security. Additionally, global coal price fluctuations and supply chain disruptions have driven the government to reassess its energy resources, leading to a push for more sustainable and cost-effective solutions.
