Grab a cup of Joe and learn about John... John Calvin that is! In this SFR+ series we look back to the life and works of the controversial figure from the Reformation. The bulk of this podcast will be John Calvin's Biblical Commentaries and current debates on his views, but we also look to his Institutes of the Christian Religion, his Letters, Tracts, and even modern Biographies that were written as recently as 1975. Guests in agreement with the revolutionary Christian thinker as well as those opposed are welcome to discuss a man whose works changed the course of human history.
Our Nation Needs to Hear this Message from Martin Luther | ep. 17
In this episode, I read through a small excerpt from a Martin Luther Christmas sermon and look at how desperately our modern American culture needs to hear this message. I have provided the excerpt below:
"He is the sole redeemer of man from the thralldome of sinand the gates of death. He alone is the hope of any enduring society upon earth. Where men do not know Bethlehem's babe they rave and rage and strive. The angels proclaimed peace on earth, and so shall it be to those who know and receive this Babe. For what is it like where Jesus Christ is not? What is theworld if not a perfect hell with nothing but lying, cheating, gluttony, guzzling, lechery, brawling, and murder. That is the very Devil himself. There is no kindliness nor honor. No one is sure of another. One must be as distrustful of friends as of enemies, and sometimes more. This is the kingdom of the world where the Devil reigns and rules. But the angels show in their song that those who know and accept the Child Jesus not only give honor to God but treat their fellow men as if they were gods, with peaceable demeanor, glad to help and counsel any man. They are free from envy and wrangling, for the Christian way is quiet and friendly in peace and brotherly love where each gladly does the best he can for another." - Martin Luther

Is Election Conditioned on Being Weak and Unwise? | Responding to an Arminian View of 1st Corinthians 1:27-29 | ep. 16
This episode is a response to the post below by Soteriology 101 on YouTube. I have copied the text from the post below:
"Calvinists: God's choice is unconditional.
1 Corinthians 1:27–29: “God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world.”
Those are conditions.
Calvinist: God caused them to meet those conditions by graciously effectual means.
Where does it say that in the Bible?"
In 1st Corinthians Paul talks about God choosing what is low in the world, people who are not wise, people who are not royal, does this mean God's election is conditional? Join us in this episode where we establish the teaching of unconditional election and look at 1st Corinthians 1:18-31 in its proper context.

How Fallen Man Is Totally Unable to Merit God's Grace | Choice vs. Chosen in the NT | CWJC ep. 15
One of the most humbling truths in the Bible is the teaching that all men are born fallen in Adam. The biblical picture of what it means to be spiritually dead in that condition is one of inability, one of being an enemy, and one of wandering into sin as lost sheep. In other words, we do not seek God, far from it, we seek sin. But it is through God's love that His grace powerfully and effectually changes us in a moment through the preaching of the Gospel, whereby faith is bestowed as a gift.Related to this biblical anthropology is the topic of whether or not the word "choice" should be used of humans, or of only Jesus Christ, and why translations render the word Eklektos differently in certain passages when referring to either Jesus or humans. Get your coffee and tune in for a good one.#reformedtheology #calvinism #Christianity #biblestudy #jesus #totaldepravity --------------------------------LINKS---------------------------------Science Faith & Reasoning podcast link: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/science-faith-reasoning Coffee with John Calvin Podcast link (An SFR+ Production hosted by Daniel Faucett) https://open.spotify.com/show/5UWb8SavK17HO8ERorHPYN Learning the Fundaments (An SFR+ Production hosted by Shepard Merritt): https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/shep304/ -----------------------------CONNECT------------------------------https://www.scifr.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sciencefaithandreasoning X: https://twitter.com/SFRdaily

Why Try to Be Saved if Election is True? | Reddit User Question on r/Calvinism | ep. 14
In this episode, I answer the following Reddit question from a Biblical perspective on Election:
"Hello, I was introduced to Calvinism a few years ago. Right now, I'm currently unsaved whereas wrath is my final destination. My question is: if salvation is based on who is the elect, is there really any reason to worry since it is all in the hands of God? I mean because no matter what you do, it has nothing to do with what you do therefore your fate is not in your hands. I ask because though I am struggling to get saved, if I'm not the elect then I'm going to hell regardless therefore why continue trying to get saved? God has picked his chosen people whom he will save and who he will not. Is it not up to us. Someone clarify please. Still learning."
Discussed are the differences in primary and secondary causes, the Gospel, and the beauty of election.

Breaking Down the John 6:44 Debate | White vs. Flowers | Coffee with John Calvin ep. 13
In this video, I review the debate that James White and Leighton Flowers had on John 6:44 (which really ended up being a debate on John 6:45). I am more Reformed so I was already extremely biased in White's direction, and after reviewing the debate more thoroughly, I still feel like White's position is much more easily defended from the text they were actually debating. Each side could pull from outside texts, but the simple reality is that the text itself teaches an effective drawing of God on a particular group, the elect.#reformed #calvinism #arminianism #freewill #debate #christianity #jameswhite --------------------------------LINKS---------------------------------Science Faith & Reasoning podcast link: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/science-faith-reasoning Coffee with John Calvin Podcast link (An SFR+ Production hosted by Daniel Faucett) https://open.spotify.com/show/5UWb8SavK17HO8ERorHPYN Learning the Fundaments (An SFR+ Production hosted by Shepard Merritt): https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/shep304/ ----------------------SPECIAL THANKS------------------------James White & Leighton Flowers-----------------------------CONNECT------------------------------https://www.scifr.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sciencefaithandreasoning X: https://twitter.com/SFRdaily

The Unregenerate Mind and The Martyrdom of Charlie Kirk (A Calvinist Perspective) | ep. 12
In this episode, I look at Scripture pertaining to three areas: (1) the unregenerate mind of unbelievers, (2) God's divine plan amidst horrific evils, and (3) the necessity of declaring the Gospel so that God can work through it to save elect sinners. It is hard for us as Christians to process school shootings and assassinations, and many other horrific events in the world, but we must always know that they happen in accordance with God's plan, and He is working them out for the good of His children, and is working through His children to bring the living, abiding, and regenerative Word to lost sinners, the enemies of God. We must love our enemies by giving them our lives of service and the Gospel.

Reprobation & The Gift of Faith | Calvin on John 6:43-44 | ep. 011
In this episode, we look at Calvin's commentary on John 6:43-44 (NASB 1995), "43 Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day."
I discuss the concept of faith as a gift to God's elect people, His sheep, as well as the passing over, or reprobation, of those who reject Christ.

The Shepherd Protects the Elect | Calvin on John 6:39 | Drawn by the Father - Part 4 | ep. 008
In this episode, we look at John Calvin's commentary on John 6:39. We see a clear picture of the justification and reasoning behind how we can rest assured that we have eternal security in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
We also look at some of the parallels between John 6 and John 10, that in both scenarios, we see that the Father gives the elect to the Son, just in John 10 we see that the elect are described as Sheep.

Predestined Individuals or a Predestined Process? | John 6:38-39 | Drawn by The Father - Part 3 | ep. 007
In this episode, I first respond to a Reddit troll who completely misunderstood my article on the correlation between obedience and our love for God/success for the Kingdom. Next, I look at Calvin's commentary of John 6:38-39, as well as Ephesians 1:1-12, to see if individuals are predestined (adopted) by God, or if simply the process (or plan) of salvation was predestined by God.
One of the most convincing aspects of John 6, in terms of predestination and election referring to individuals, is the word "everyone". If everyone given to the Son is raised up on the last day, then it must mean that individuals are chosen by God with 100% effective grace. Convincing still further in Ephesians 1 is the list of personal pronouns in the context of God's adoption and predestination unto salvation.

Faith is a Gift? | Calvin on John 6:37-38 | Drawn by the Father - Part 2 | ep. 006
In this episode of the Coffee With John Calvin podcast, we discuss Calvin's view that faith is a gift from God, and that faith is not sourced from the will of fallen creatures, but is sourced only from God. It is a super interesting discussion. The idea that faith is a gift from God is supported in other areas of Scripture, as John Piper also argues, as we will see once we get further into this episode.

Thomas Aquinas on John 6:35-44 | Drawn by the Father - Part 1 | ep. 005
In this episode, I explain how irresistible grace is a doctrine that arises by a careful study of John 6:35-44. I also look to Thomas Aquinas’ commentary on the part of the passage where Christ says that of that given to Him He loses nothing, and how he attempts to reconcile that with John 17:12, where Christ says that none have been lost except the son of perdition.
Aquinas has two categories for those who place their faith in Christ, and I believe that is where he and Calvin (and myself) diverge on this issue. There are those justified by grace through faith in Christ, and there are those who are not.

John 6:35 |The Bread of Life | ep. 004
In this episode, I read John 6:35-44 to frame the discussion of prevenient vs. irresistible grace. Then, we look to John Calvin's commentary on John 6:35, where Christ refers to Himself as the Bread of Life, to see what meanings we can gather from the words of our Messiah.

Romans 8:7-9 | God's Providence and the Mind Set on the Spirit | ep. 003
In this episode, we look to John Calvin's commentary of Romans 8:7-9, where Paul shows that the believer's mind is set on the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in us.
Calvin addresses three themes in this episode, (1) divine providence, (2) human responsibility and accountability, and (3) the inadequacies of applying a freewill mindset to this passage of Scripture.

Romans 8:5-7 | The Mind Set on the Flesh | ep. 002
In this episode, we explore the difference in the mind set on the flesh vs. the mind set on the Spirit. It appears clear that Calvin taught that outside of God’s grace through regeneration, all we do is evil. And this makes sense, if we could actually do things that are spiritually fruitful without the Spirit of God in our lives, if we could actually do what is pleasing to God without God working through us, then we wouldn’t actually be dead in our sins. We would be partially alive, spiritually speaking, and that is not at all the picture of our fallen state that Scripture paints for us.
We are dead in our trespasses and sins; we are opposed to God by our very nature. We do not seek Him on our own, we do not do anything good.

John Calvin's Educational Background and His Commentary on Genesis 1:1 | ep. 001
In this episode, we look at three reasons why John Calvin possesses a unique tool kit for interpreting Scripture: (1) his background in studying Law, (2) his study of Renaissance Humanism, and (3) his study of the original languages of Scripture and early translations of Scripture (i.e., Hebrew, Latin, and Greek).
Furthermore, we look at Calvin's commentary on Genesis 1:1 to exemplify his abilities in utilizing the original languages and his education to understand the text of Scripture conservatively and literally.
