ANALYSIS: Hart, Oury and Phelps: Loveland City Council “No Shows” Edition

Published October 26, 2021. LOVELAND, Ohio — There are three candidates for Loveland City Council who chose not participate in the Coffee with the Candidate podcast, so we decided to invite a local political watcher to help analyze what's going on with their campaigns. Incumbents Neal Oury and Ted Phelps never responded to multiple requests to be on the podcast. Newcomer John Hart, a Loveland Intermediate School vice principal and longtime math teacher and coach in the Loveland City School District, declined. He said Loveland Local News asking for his employee file from the school district - a very common tactic for any public official - was uncalled for and refused to participate. So, Loveland Local News Publisher Joe Wessels brought on Ryan Kulik, a political consultant on local campaigns around the country who has a Master's in political science and lives in Loveland, to talk about what he sees. And he sees a lot. He often talks about it on his own local podcast, and, well, what he sees he often does not like. Wessels and Kulik go deep into these three men, issues in Loveland, and discuss where things stand just days before Election Day (that's Tuesday, November 2, 2021, by the way). Listen and let us know what you think.

Coffee with Elizabeth Mason: Loveland school board candidate, financial specialist

Published October 24, 2021. LOVELAND, Ohio — Elizabeth Mason wants to be on the school board to get things back on track. Mason met with Loveland Local News Publisher Joe Wessels at the Loveland branch of the Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County to discuss why she is running, why she chose to run with Al Juram and Colette Boyko on a slate, and how she hopes to bring back some old-fashioned values to Loveland schools - including getting student and teachers away from depending on laptops for so much of their learning. The married mother of two talks about why her age - she's 38, though we really do hate to have to ask that as is mentioned - has become a bit of a talking point as she's campaigned - and a whole lot more. Coffee with Colette Boyko: Loveland school board candidate, software company associate

Published October 24, 2021. LOVELAND, Ohio — Colette Boyko says the best part of running for the school board has been getting to know so many people in the community. The candidate for the Loveland City School District school board thinks her listening skills will be her key to success as a school board member - something she feels has been lacking in recent years as it relates to school board members. Watching two school levies fail in recent years prompted her desire to be on the board and she launched her campaign. Boyko sat down with Joe Wessels, the publisher of Loveland Local News, on a beautiful fall day on the rooftop of Ramsey's Trailside in downtown Loveland, to discuss school funding, what comes next for the soon-to-be finally strapped Loveland school system. Boyko also talks about her decision to run on a slate with fellow first-time candidates Elizabeth Mason and Al Juram. Duration: 30:41 Recorded on 9/28/2021.

Coffee with Tim Butler: Loveland City Councilman, attorney…spinning instructor?

Published October 24, 2021. LOVELAND, Ohio — Tim Butler is wrapping up his first term on Loveland City Council in a very different place from where he started. Having run with three other Council members last time, one, Vice Mayor Rob Weisgerber, isn't running after nearly 30 years on Council, and two other incumbents decided they'd rather run without him and picked two new people to form a slate. The issue? It appears disagreeing with his fellow Council members - who tended to vote in lockstep with one another and Mayor Kathy Bailey (who appears to dictate much of city policy with Weisgerber) - is a good way to get kicked to the curb. So, Butler is going it alone. In his candidate interview with Loveland Local News Publisher Joe Wessels, Butler talks about these issues, how things changed for him and why, despite being at odds with nearly all the other Council members, he wants to keep going. Duration: 38:42 Recorded on 9/24/2021.

Coffee with Eric Schwetschenau: appointed Loveland school board and candidate Nov. 2

Published October 24, 2021. LOVELAND, Ohio — Eric Schwetshenau never exactly envisioned a turn toward the political, but that's where he found himself in 2020 when a long-time school board member resigned. Schwetshenau, pronounced "Shhh-wet-shuh-now," who is a successful otolaryngologic surgeon (that's ear, nose, and throat doctor to the rest of us), was asked to apply for his seat on the Loveland school board during a period when his seat and another seat, formerly occupied by Ned Portune, opened up when Portune resigned. The remaining board members appointed him to the open seat. With two brand-new members on the five-person board, two failed levies, a teacher contract to be signed and a raging worldwide pandemic, Dr. Eric, as he is often called, had his hands full. Loveland Local News publisher, Joe Wessels, talks to Schwetshenau about his recent record on the school board – including a controversial vote to not require students to wear face masks - and why he decided he wanted to take on this new role. And, why he wants to continue to serve, despite the controversies and the tough decisions the school board will face. Duration: 34:08 Recorded on 9/26/2021.

Now she's running to be a part of the school board she once opposed. Bunker sat down with Loveland Local News Publisher Joe Wessels to discuss her Loveland City School District School Board candidacy and her founding the Loveland Voice, a political action committee that worked - and some say succeeded - to defeat the last two school levies brought by the Loveland school board. She shares her views and opinions and why she is running for the school board. Duration: 32:47 Recorded on 9/21/2021.

Coffee with incumbent Kevin Dougherty, Loveland school board candidate

Published September 26, 2021. LOVELAND, Ohio — There's one person on the ballot this fall who isn't really too worried about how many votes he will need. And he's a guest on the inaugural "Coffee with the Candidate" podcast. Kevin Dougherty, an appointed incumbent Loveland City School District school board member, was sworn in May 2020. He took the seat of longtime school board member and former school board president Art Jarvis. Jarvis resigned in the wake of a second school levy failure and amidst widespread community angst over the board's direction. No one else filed to run against Dougherty before the early August deadline, and who, under Ohio law, must run for the seat at the next general election after being appointed. That contest will happen on Tuesday, November 2. Jarvis, re-elected in 2019 and began his new term in January 2020, would have served through 2023. Dougherty will serve out Jarvis' term. He said he does not plan to run for a full term in 2023. Dougherty is retired from Cincinnati-based Kroger Company, the nation's largest retail grocer, retiring in 2017 as the chief digital officer. He worked on projects including ClickList and online delivery, among other tech-related projects for the company. He lives in Symmes Township with his wife, Barbara. He spoke to Loveland Local News for nearly 40 minutes on issues from his running unopposed to how long he takes to prepare for each school board meeting (it's a lot), plus how to rebuild the school district's standing in the community after the two levy failures - including a 16.8-mill levy that was defeated by more than 80 percent of voters. Kevin Dougherty sat down with Loveland Local News Editor Joe Wessels on Friday, September 17, 2021, at Tony's on Montgomery Road. The wide-ranging interview covered nearly all of the standard questions being asked of all school board candidates through this podcast but also covered other topics, including how he wound up on the school board in the first place – and just how in the world he wound up all alone, running against no one. While meanwhile fellow appointee, Eric Schwetschenau, wound up in a field race with eight candidates. Be sure to subscribe to the show in your favorite podcast app and rate and review it so others can find it before Election Day. And don't forget: voter registration ends on October 4, 2021, in Ohio; early voting begins on October 5, and the actual polls are open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. on November 2. Thank you for listening!
