#22: He Gambled the Money For His Wedding & Still Couldn't Stop | The Addicted Recovery Show

In this episode of The Addicted Recovery Show, Alyx Effron, Founder of Collectors MD, joins host Danny for a deeply personal conversation about gambling addiction, compulsive collecting, recovery, and the ways those behaviors can intersect. Alyx shares his lived experience with sports betting, live blackjack, sneakers, sports cards, overspending, chasing losses, relapse, treatment, self-exclusion, and recovery. He reflects on how behaviors that initially felt separate eventually began feeding one another, and why it took time to recognize that the same patterns of chasing, rationalization, secrecy, and loss of control could show up both in gambling and collecting. The conversation also explores the origins of Collectors MD and why Alyx felt there was a gap for people whose behaviors did not always fit neatly into traditional gambling recovery. He explains how Collectors MD was built to help bridge that gap through peer support, education, intentional collecting, abstinence pathways, tools, resources, and connections to the broader recovery community. Together, Alyx and Danny discuss Alyx’s progression from collecting and overspending into sports betting and live blackjack, the psychology of chasing losses, and why gambling eventually became less about money and more about the feeling. They explore how collecting and gambling began reinforcing one another, the role of secrecy, rationalization, ego, and financial harm in active addiction, and why knowing something is harmful is not always enough to stop. They also discuss the importance of treatment, Gamblers Anonymous, self-exclusion, and community in recovery, why some people struggling with compulsive collecting may not identify with traditional gambling recovery, the difference between intentional collecting and abstinence, and how Collectors MD is working to bridge the collectibles and recovery communities. This episode is an open and vulnerable conversation about addiction, recovery, and what can happen when a passion slowly becomes a chase. It is also a reminder that people do not have to wait until everything falls apart before asking for help. If you recognize part of your own story in this conversation, you are not alone. #21: The CMD Foundation | Professor Sports Cards

In this episode of Professor Sports Cards, Alyx Effron, Founder of Collectors MD, returns to join host, Jason, for a candid and wide-ranging conversation about modern collecting, speculation, and why the hobby's evolution has created both incredible opportunities and real risks. Acknowledging the pushback and questions that followed his previous appearance, Alyx discusses the official launch of The CMD Foundation (https://lohas.org/client/the-cmd-foundation/), the nonprofit arm of Collectors MD, and explains why the organization adopted a hybrid structure—maintaining Collectors MD as an LLC focused on content, education, partnerships, and community-building, while creating a nonprofit dedicated to expanding peer support, educational initiatives, outreach, and scholarship programs. The conversation quickly shifts into the realities of today's hobby environment. From prospecting and investing culture to endless product releases and social media hype, Alyx and Jason explore how modern collecting often encourages collectors to focus on outcomes rather than the enjoyment of collecting itself. They discuss the psychology behind speculation, the pressure to constantly chase the "next big thing," and why so many collectors struggle to slow down. Collector Charles also joins the discussion, sharing how important it is to reconnect with the reasons we started collecting in the first place. They examine the difference between collecting for meaning and collecting for growth, while discussing why today's abundance of products, platforms, and opportunities can make intentional collecting increasingly difficult. Together, they dive into: Why Collectors MD launched The CMD Foundation and what this next chapter means for the mission The differences between Collectors MD LLC and The CMD Foundation Why national media outlets are beginning to pay attention to these issues How breaks, singles, retail, and "investing" can all become problematic when behaviors become compulsive Why modern collecting often feels endless and difficult to step away from The role social media, influencers, and hype cycles play in shaping collector behavior Why collecting cards you genuinely enjoy may ultimately lead to a healthier and more sustainable hobby experience The importance of accountability, intentionality, and slowing down in a hobby increasingly driven by urgency and speculation This episode is a nuanced conversation about balance, intentionality, and the importance of creating healthier relationships with the hobbies we love.
