Why Higher Education Resists Change: Macalester College President Emeritus Brian Rosenberg on the Future of Universities, Live From the UERU Leadership Summit at CSU

How can research universities best serve undergraduates? In August, that critical question brought more than 180 leaders from 50 institutions to Colorado State University for the national Leadership Summit of the Association for Undergraduate Education at Research Universities, known as UERU. To open the summit, President Amy Parsons sat down live on stage with Brian Rosenberg, president emeritus of Macalester College and visiting professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, for this special episode of The Next 150. Brian is the author of "Whatever It Is, I'm Against It": Resistance to Change in Higher Education and is one of the nation’s most thoughtful voices on the future of higher education. He has spent much of his career asking tough questions about how colleges and universities can adapt to a rapidly changing world while staying true to their core purpose. During the conversation, he and President Parsons explore the necessity of change, the cultural and structural barriers that often stand in the way, and how institutions can become even stronger and more effective for the students they serve. Brian also shares what he learned as a college president about how lasting change takes hold. About UERU at CSU ⤵️ Colorado State University's number one priority is student success, and the university is always looking for ways to innovate and improve undergraduate education. As part of that work, CSU has hosted the Association for Undergraduate Education at Research Universities, known as UERU, on its campus since 2013. CSU is proud to serve as UERU's home, but more importantly, proud to be part of a higher education community that believes we can learn from one another and work together to create successful outcomes for all students. UERU is a coalition of leaders from research institutions committed to transforming undergraduate education. Founded in 2000, it encourages collaboration, advances professional development, and helps its members exchange best practices. More About Our Guest ⤵️ Brian Rosenberg is currently a visiting professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and president emeritus of Macalester College, where he served as the 16th president from 2003 to 2020. He is the author of “Whatever It Is, I'm Against It": Resistance to Change in Higher Education, published by Harvard Education Press in 2023, a widely discussed insider critique arguing that the structures and cultures of American higher education — shared governance, faculty tenure, disciplinary silos — are themselves the chief obstacles to transformational change. A Charles Dickens scholar by training, he earned his B.A. from Cornell University and his Ph.D. in English from Columbia University, and has taught at Allegheny College and Lawrence University, where he also served as dean of the faculty. He writes regularly for The Chronicle of Higher Education and has been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times. He serves as senior advisor to the African Leadership University and as a member of the board of the Teagle Foundation. Behind the Camera: How Emmy-Winning Filmmakers John Barnhardt '96 and CSU Student Boyan Bashovski Are Telling CSU's Story and Inspiring the Next Generation of Filmmakers

Proud Colorado State University alum John Barnhardt and student filmmaker Boyan Bashovski are usually seen around campus with cameras in hand, telling other people's stories. In this episode of The Next 150, the Emmy winners step in front of the camera with President Amy Parsons to share how a land-grant approach to hands-on learning is shaping the future of visual storytelling at CSU. John talks about his path from studying poetry at CSU to becoming a Daytime Emmy Award-winning filmmaker for his directing and cinematography on Born to Explore with Richard Wiese. He then came back home to direct An Open Door, an award-winning feature documentary on CSU Distinguished Professor Temple Grandin, and brought CSU students onto his crew from the start. Today, his team at Barnfly Productions has produced more than 300 video projects for the College of Agricultural Sciences, CSU Athletics, Army ROTC, and the Democracy Project, from equine science research and ranching to documentaries on CSU women's basketball and volleyball. Boyan transferred to CSU from Front Range Community College and joined Barnfly Productions after a chance meeting with John outside the Lory Student Center, where Boyan was filming friends skateboarding. Boyan is a Heartland Student Production Emmy winner for Pop Punk Grandma, a non-fiction film about a woman whose love of music and craft brings people together and challenges assumptions about age, identity, and belonging. Now as a director for Barnfly, Boyan talks about working alongside his classmates, learning from the people whose stories they tell, and helping others find their place behind the camera. Together, John and Boyan reflect on the culture they are building in the Barnfly studio and their vision for the future of film at CSU — from an accredited film school to the opportunities Sundance Film Festival's move to Colorado could bring. The episode closes with their advice for CSU students interested in storytelling and filmmaking, and why visual storytelling matters for elevating others. More About Our Guests ⤵️ John Barnhardt '96 is an Emmy-winning filmmaker and director of multimedia production and storytelling in Colorado State University's College of Agricultural Sciences. After earning a creative writing degree from CSU, John launched his career in Charleston, South Carolina, where he worked in television, taught film for more than a decade at Trident Technical College, and founded Barnfly Productions. As director and cinematographer for Born to Explore with Richard Wiese, he traveled the world and earned a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Single Camera Photography. His feature documentary An Open Door, made with 10 CSU students, has screened at more than 70 film festivals and earned more than two dozen awards. His team's documentaries also include Undersized and Between the Lines. John now teaches honors film courses at CSU, building a home for filmmaking at his alma mater. Boyan Bashovski is a filmmaker and multimedia storyteller at Colorado State University, where he studies journalism and media communication with a minor in music, stage, and sports production and will graduate in 2027. Boyan grew up in the CSU community. His family moved to Fort Collins when his mother came to CSU for graduate school, a path that began with an international agricultural development project in Macedonia. As a director at Barnfly Productions, he tells stories about the people, education, and community impact across CSU and mentors new members of the crew. In spring 2026, Boyan received a Heartland Student Production Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for Pop Punk Grandma.

Why Land-Grant Universities Are the Backbone of 4-H: National 4-H Council CEO Jill Bramble and CSU Student Ryer Roberts

What was the role of land-grant universities in creating the nation's largest youth development organization? More than a century ago, universities worked with young farmers through corn clubs to advance new technology — and those clubs are now known as 4-H. Today, Colorado State University, through its modern land-grant mission, supports Colorado 4-H in reaching around 100,000 young people across all 64 counties each year — building the next generation of leaders in communities across Colorado, rural and urban alike. On this episode of The Next 150, that partnership comes to life as President Amy Parsons sits down with Jill Bramble, President and CEO of National 4-H Council, and Ryer Roberts, a CSU junior from Fruita, Colorado — and all three grew up in 4-H. Together they trace 4-H from its land-grant roots to 4-H's Beyond Ready, Jill's initiative to prepare 10 million young people for work, leadership, and life by 2030. They talk about why hands-on skills matter so much in the age of AI, how 4-H builds the grit and confidence that transfer to any career, and why, as Jill puts it, "we see young people as leaders today, not at some point in the future." And, as always, both Jill and Ryer share their advice — not just for future 4-H'ers, but for every CSU student. More about our guests ⤵️ Jill Bramble is President and CEO of National 4-H Council, the nation's largest youth development organization. A fourth-generation 4-H'er from rural Maryland, she has spent more than 18 years with the organization, starting as a grant writer before being named CEO and President in 2023. Today she leads Beyond Ready, a national initiative to prepare 10 million young people with the skills to be ready for work, leadership, and life, delivered through Cooperative Extension at land-grant universities across the country, including CSU. Ryer Roberts is a junior from Fruita, Colorado, majoring in Agricultural Education and a highly engaged leader with deep roots in 4-H and FFA. A former officer in both organizations, Ryer has been actively involved in shooting sports and livestock programs, and served as a National 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador. He also currently serves as Speaker of the Senate in the Associated Students of Colorado State University, the university's student government.
